Moving a loved one into a facility is hard. Move in days are not filled with happiness or joy. Instead it’s grief, guilt, fear, sadness, turmoil. It’s the ending of one chapter and the start of another. You will question if it’s the right decision or even the right time. You’ll wonder what your loved one is doing when you’re not visiting. Wondering how they’re feeling or if they got a good night’s sleep. No one ever WANTS to move into a care facility. Instead, they have to. We know this, and this is what we want you to know…

Some days are chaotic. We have a group of grown adults with all different likes, dislikes, and mindsets coming together. Days can be busy and at times it may seem like we don’t have it all together. But this is what we can tell you. Your loved one is safe and cared for. They are seen and valued. We embrace the challenges because the good always outweighs the bad. We get to braid a resident’s hair. We get to hold their hand walking through the hallway. We get to take care of them when they’re sick and most times, they get better! We get to sing happy birthday to them, celebrate holidays, and welcome new years. We get to hug them when they’re sad or scared. We have even thanked some for the days they spent with us as they were living out their last. We get to help them into their pajamas and assist them into bed, wrapping them in warm blankets and wishing them sweet dreams. We GET to do these things for your loved ones and we are honored to be given the opportunity.

We know move in days are hard. The weeks and months following can be hard too. We know how much you love those you had to place into our care. And you know what? We end up loving them too.

At Prairie Cottages we know that giving the best care that all our residents deserve takes a village. When residents are needing more support during their final journeys, we are so thankful for hospice! Albert Lea Prairie Cottages has been fortunate to work with a few different hospice companies- St. Croix, Mayo, Prairie Grace; just to name a few. All of which are wonderful hospice providers.

Pictured here is Alissa, a nurse with Prairie Grace Hospice. This hospice provider is a sister company to our Prairie Cottages and was started by our owner, Dustin Lee. While Prairie Grace hospice is a newer company in the hospice world; the hands and hearts behind the care our residents get can be summed up in a few words. Loving, wholesome, compassionate, supportive, and devoted. This team is not new to providing outstanding care and comfort.

We are grateful for all the hospice companies our cottage gets to work with! Thank you all for the loving care you give to our residents! ❤️

We are thrilled to announce that Tom Zukowski has joined our team as the new Director of Prairie Cottages in Owatonna! Tom brings extensive experience, enthusiasm, and a dedication to building meaningful connections within our community.

Tom’s journey is as dynamic as it is inspiring. Born and raised in Wisconsin, he pursued a career in coaching and sports apparel, dedicating over 30 years to mentoring and shaping teams. After coaching, Tom transitioned into senior living, where his passion for creating vibrant, supportive environments has flourished. From independent living to assisted living and memory care, Tom has gained a deep understanding of building thriving communities.

What stands out most about Tom is his passion for people. He values the wisdom and experiences of older adults and works to ensure every resident feels engaged, cared for, and part of a larger family. With a focus on teamwork, he excels at uniting staff, fostering collaboration, and creating moments of joy for residents and their families.

Tom’s Midwest roots and love for the area make Owatonna a great fit. Outside work, he enjoys cooking, staying active, and spending time with his two children, who live nearby.
