ClearSky Rehabilitation Hospital of Baytown incorporated mirror therapy into stroke rehabilitation with their patient, Jerilyn. Following her stroke, Jerilyn was initially unable to move her right side. This session focused specifically on facilitating activation and movement of her shoulder.
This evidence-based intervention promotes neuroplasticity by using visual feedback to help the brain re-establish motor pathways on the affected side. During the session, Jerilyn performed guided movements while observing the reflection of her unaffected extremity, allowing the brain to interpret the movement as occurring bilaterally. This process supports motor relearning, improves awareness of the involved side, and enhances participation in purposeful tasks.
Mirror therapy remains a valuable tool for improving coordination, restoring function, and helping patients regain independence in daily activities following a stroke.
