Excessive refined sugar intake has far-reaching detrimental effects on the body, both immediately and in the long run. Diets high in refined sugars are strongly linked to elevated levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides, which promote plaque buildup in the arteries. This narrowing and hardening of the arteries, known as atherosclerosis, is a major risk factor for heart attacks and strokes. Refined sugars also contribute to insulin resistance, a precursor to type 2 diabetes, where cells become less responsive to insulin, forcing the pancreas to work harder. Over time, this can exhaust the pancreas, leading to elevated blood glucose levels and complications like nerve damage, vision loss, and kidney disease.
