After an aortic rupture, Eric had only a 4% chance of survival. He beat the odds, though, and admitted to our Encompass Health rehabilitation hospital in Woburn, Massachusetts to continue his cardiac recovery.

Eric returned home to a community parade. Thanks to his therapy and the care he received, he’s now walking independently and enjoying retirement. His family calls him the miracle man!
Eric’s story is a powerful example of how inpatient rehabilitation can help those recovering from cardiac events or other life-changing illness or injury return to what they love.

During American Heart Month, we want to recognize patients like Howard who are recovering from heart surgery.

After the heartbreaking loss of his grandson, Howard Jones, a farmer in Brooksville, Kentucky, suffered a massive heart attack. After extensive surgery, he needed inpatient rehabilitation to regain his strength and independence.

During recovery at our rehabilitation hospital in Edgewood, Kentucky, Howard wasn’t sure what to expect. He only knew he wanted one thing: to get strong enough to return to the fields he’d tended his entire life. What he didn’t anticipate was how something as simple as a handful of peppermint candies — and the clinician who offered them — would help rebuild more than just his independence, but also his hope for getting back to his farm and family.

It is our privilege to help patients like Howard recover after a cardiac event or any other life-changing illness or injury.

After Howard experienced a heart attack and heart surgery, cardiac complications led him to Encompass Health to help him get back to life on his...

In two weeks, Chris discharged fully independent. He was able to stand, transfer without assistance and walk again. He was thrilled with his progress!

During American Heart Month, we want to highlight patients like Chris. He is proof that with the right rehabilitation, recovery is possible after a major cardiac event.

Through hard work and family support, Kyle went from using a power wheelchair to walking independently in just one week. During his rehabilitation, he practiced kneeling with his therapy team so he could propose to his longtime significant other. She said yes!

In recognition of , take a moment to learn about the brain and heart connection and how caring for one can help improve the health of the other and reduce your risk of a heart attack or stroke.
