We are excited to introduce our new Central Region Representative!

Donna Marie Lucero is a native New Mexican from Albuquerque and a University of New Mexico graduate (BA in psychology with a minor in family studies; MA in counseling; and a second master’s in Language, Literacy and Sociocultural Studies with a certificate in Race and Social Justice). She has over 30 years of experience working with children and families facing trauma, mental health challenges, poverty, and adversity, and has provided professional development to more than 10,000 participants across trainings, conferences, and workshops. She emphasizes early childhood development, healthy brain development, attachment, relationships, family and community support, and the role of movement, music, nature, and activity in fostering growth and healing.
Donna works from a trauma-informed lens, grounding her approach in current research on brain development, developmental trauma, and strategies that support healing and integration. Her training spans multiple models, including the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics, Attachment, Regulation and Competence, Circle of Security, Nurtured Heart Approach, Nurturing Parenting, Brain Gym, and Growing Brain, alongside extensive study in research, theory, and practical application. She has over 20 years of experience as a clinical supervisor and clinical director supporting therapists and behavioral health workers serving trauma-impacted communities. She also serves as a graduate-level instructor in the University of New Mexico’s Counseling Department.

In her position as Central Region Rep, Donna will be coordinating and networking with other mental health professionals and organizations on behalf of NMMHCA. We are so grateful to have her on the NMMHCA board! If you are interested in working with Donna, please reach out to nmmhca@gmail.com

Ethical Decision Making Model for Supervision
Friday, January 9, 2026: 9am-12pm MST

Session Description: Dr. Herzog and Dr. Miller will discuss Ethical Decision Making Models and implementation in clinical supervision. ACA promotes using a credible ethical decision-making model to navigate dilemmas, enhance counselor competence, and protect client welfare. They will provide case examples for practical application in remediation, professional development, and gatekeeping.

By attending this training participants will:
1. Clinical supervisors will be able to utilize a standardized ethical decision-making model with their supervisee counselors
2. Identify benefits of utilizing a credible Ethical decision-making model for navigating and documenting ethical dilemmas in the counseling field
3. Apply Welfel's Ethical Decision-Making Model to case scenarios
4. Develop a consistent procedure to instruct supervisees to use when faced with ethical dilemmas.

Session Description: Dr. Christine Herzog is presenting the results from her dissertation, a generic qualitative study, that interviewed ten LPCs from across the United States about their experiences with advocacy engagement in rural school settings. The four themes that will be discussed are creating advocacy role expectations, focusing on clients' basic and mental health needs, overcoming resistance to build relationships and trust, and reducing rural barriers to increase service access.

By attending this training, you will be able to:
1. Discuss findings that contribute to the existing body of research in the counseling field to advance the understanding of advocacy in rural mental health.
2. Identify important issues related to school-based counseling, rural mental health and advocacy competencies.
3. Apply the research findings into mental health professionals' advocacy engagement.
