I have made it my life's work to inspire people with tools and techniques to help heal and balance their bodies. ou jump into all of the good stuff that we have here, I'd like to share with you my story of how I got here and why I'm so passionate about helping you empower yourself with knowledge and tools to heal yourself. I grew up in a household where our medicine cabinets were filled not with aspirin and pain relievers but Vitamin E, Calcium, Homeopathic remedies, and herbal tinctures. In fact, we did not have any allopathic medicines in our home at all. My Dad is an Applied Kinesiologist and Nutritionist as well, so all of our 'medicines' were food and herb based. I never went to allopathic doctors growing up, as my Dad was always focused on balancing out the Nervous System through adjustments, food, and nutrition. Then teenager years hit. Late nights, travelling, my parents divorce, eating pizza, trying all of 'the bad stuff' that I knew I wasn't supposed to be doing but following along with the crowed... you get the picture. My energy level plummeted, and I was sleeping every afternoon that I could. With college years it worsened and was at its' worst as I was finishing off Chiropractic school. I slept 10 hours a night and then 2 hours every afternoon. Then came baby # 1 and baby #2 and with that, subsequent fatigue that resulted in 8-10 hours of sleep, waking up being tired and ready to go back to bed within an hour. Anxiety about how to make it through each day....Naps being a requirement, not being able to do anything after 2 pm because I needed time to lie down and sleep for 2 hours. My brain was thick with fog, my limbs felt leaden weights, and I had constant pain in my hip, my shoulder, itchy patches in various areas around my body. I tried every healer, body worker, herb, supplement that I could. I was already vegetarian and thought that I was eating a healthy diet... and I was. I baked my own bread, ground my own grain for muffins, cakes and cookies, I ate salad and organic cheese on my crackers, I drank Golden Milk and I detoxed periodically. I loved my sweets and breads and ate plenty of cheese and fruit. I had heard about gluten-free and dairy alternatives but thought that it was a bunch of nonsense. But, after years of suffering and trying everything that I could think of, I finally talked myself into taking a week break from all wheat, dairy and sugar (including maple syrup, honey, and agave). Within about 7 days, I started noticing that my thoughts were more clear, my brain was feeling less dense. My body felt lighter and I wasn't as tired when I woke up in the morning. I was pretty happy with this progress, so I kept it up. That was 2012. Over the years, I have continued my journey working on decreasing my inflammation by working with an awesome herbalist, Dr. Karta Purkh Khalsa, my Chiropractor Mark Jensen, and my Acupuncture friend and colleague, Dr. Japa Khalsa. I 'cheat' periodically at friends' birthday parties, social events or special occasions if there is a food that I really want to eat and enjoy with everyone. But, 98% of the time, I stay away from foods that I know cause my fingers and hands to swell, the itchy spot on my forehead ( random, right?!) to flare up, and my left shoulder to ache. My eyes are bright and clear, I can truly and deeply listen when my patients talk to me about their health challenges, I no longer have anxiety about life, and I love waking up in the mornings to see what the day will bring me. I am sharing this with you because I want you to know that I have been where a lot of you are now. I know what it's like to be in so much pain that crawling on the floor is the alternative to lying in bed, to get depressed from pain and fatigue, to cry because there seems like there is no help anywhere. I want you to know that there is a lot that YOU can do. You can change your life through diet, mindfulness, movement, breath and elimination. Your doctor does not have all of the answers, although they can be a part of your health team. You have the gift of being your own best healer. Your body has the tools that it needs to heal itself, if it is given the opportunity. With food elimination, adding whole foods, moving, breathing correctly, proper sleep, your body has many of the tools to adjust and balance itself. This is both easy and difficult at the same time. It is a journey that takes commitment. And, I know you all have it in you. In our website we have offered lots of tools and goodies for you to try to start you on your health journey. Just start with one thing and commit to trying it for a week. I know that, if you just start with one thing, you will start noticing some changes. This is why I'm passionate about sending out these 'quick health tips': I love to help people and I love people to reclaim their birthright to be happy, healthy and holy. The power is inside of you and is just waiting to wake up and express itself in its' own, unique way. Just start. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit our site and for taking the time to read my story. I write it to, hopefully, inspire you to find something that can help get you started on your journey toward health and vitality. With love and light,

Dr. Arjan Khalsa

My Chiropractic sisters….in a still very male-dominated profession, these ladies (plus a few more not pictured here) have my back in a way that only a woman knows how to do.

Sorry, but the guys still don’t know what it’s like to be ruled by hormones and a changing week/ month, what it’s like to run a business while raising your kids and running a household, maintaining friendships and taking care of dinner at night (and making sure everyone has clean clothes, permission slips signed and broccoli at least one meal a week)

Grateful for the laughs, the late night texts about how to help a nursing mom dealing with Hashimotos, how to navigate those pesky patients and that it’s ok to say ‘no’ when needed.

Yesterday I found out that one of my favorite patients died from cancer.

I saw her last in May after she’d been in a car accident. She was driving down to ABQ from Chimayo which is a 1.5 hour drive to get Chiropractic and Craniosacral care with me post accident.

But then her doctor found that her liver enzymes were elevated and she had to cancel her appointment with me to get some scans done.

And that was it. I reached out a few times to check on her. No response which was unusual. Yesterday I texted again and her husband texted for me to call him.

I took a deep breath and waited a few minutes to call him, not knowing what I was going to receive.

I cried on the phone for a minute and this guy, the ex-army guy, the bouncer, the man-who-loved-his-wife more than anyone I’ve ever seen, just sat there with me and let me cry.

I didn’t get to see her once more, I didn’t get to say goodbye….. but I DO remember, at my last appointment with her, I hugged her and told her that I loved her.

People, This isn’t the first time someone has moved on and I didn’t get to say my good-bye’s, but from the last couple unexpected deaths, I learned my lesson…..

Don’t hold back. Say ‘I love you’ like it’s your last. Give hugs freely. Let people know how you feel (mostly the good stuff if you like that person).

I’ve never regretted giving too many hugs and letting everyone know that I love them.

I DO regret when I didn’t say it.

…..and even though I consistently and regularly embarrass my daughter by telling her boyfriend of 6 months that I love him or give hugs to Kenyan strangers in parking lots, I’m going to keep on.

There’s lots of love to give and receive, if and when we allow it in.

So to Paulette, I love you. I’ll miss you. You made my life better. You showed me what true dedication to family is.

And all of you who have made it this far, I love you. I’m grateful for you. You’ve made my life better.

Being in the water, on the water, around it…..brings me back to myself…where I feel whole and alive and at home.

Unfortunately I rediscovered this place AFTER I left northern New Mexico and now have to drive almost 2 hours to get here.

My paddle board. My journal. Velarde peaches from Romero’s.

Made for a perfect day trip and now I’m recharged and ready to get back to my routine.

I was off social media for a few months and during that time we went to this heaven on earth that Karan created

She’s created this beautiful sanctuary for all of us who have been through the wringer over the last few decades and I hope that, whoever feels that little tug in their heart, to go for it.

It’s healing, it’s easy. The food nourishes the soul. And I didn’t have to do absolutely anything I didn’t feel like doing….which, for me, was the martial arts. I’m too old to be thrown down on yoga mats now. And you know what? I didn’t have an ounce of guilt about it.

I went to that class to be supported because I know how it is when you’re running in the retreat and your friends go off and do other things and not part of the group and Karan, with the softness of smiles, said you take care of yourself and do whatever feels absolutely wonderful for you

So that’s how we left… With that softness and sweetness that I didn’t have for many decades and that I’m learning to curate for myself and my family

Thank you so so much for all the staff and the beauty that you created Karan, at Mahai

I’ve been contemplating life and death a lot lately.

What it means to live….and not the ‘live everyday like it’s your last’ because, honestly, we can’t do that.

We have to live for today and next week and next month and next year and like we have 30, 40 plus more years to live.

We have to make money, invest in our friendships and relationships. We have to eat as if we want to live well into our 90’s. We have to exercise and move but simultaneously take time to just be.

We have to better ourselves so that we create opportunities for next year but also watch that same Modern Family episode that makes us laugh every time, just to have a laugh for the day

I want to see how it all turns out. I want to know how my husbands business endeavor goes. I want to see who my kids’ persons are. I want to see if I have grandkids and who and what they’re like.

I want to see if I actually get to attain fluency in other languages besides my mother tongue. I want to see if I ever get to live on the lakeside, if I get to live abroad, if I get to go to Africa again.

and going to my favorite cemetery, however macabre it might be, reading the head stones, imagining what those lives were like and how they lived them….were they happy? Did they have people who missed them, did they live a full life, were they scared when they were dying….it brings a wonder about all of it….this beautiful, crazy, uncertain life.

and weirdly, I find refuge in all of it. Knowing that my life is going to be what it is, and if I died tomorrow, I could die saying that I had a great time here.
