Our Approach

Small Steps Child Counseling, LLC provides our youngest members of society and their families with specialized clinical mental health care. Our approach focuses on helping children develop healthy neurological and psychological functioning as well as healthy relationships and resiliency. So much of the latest research on the brain has proven that healthy attachment and early mental health intervention can impact a person’s life in almost every way: relationships with others, life decisions, physical health, academic functioning and future family dynamics. Small Steps is motivated to reach younger children at a time of life when neurological and psychological functioning is the most impressionable and relationships between caregivers and children can be enhanced to have the most powerful impact on the mental and physical health of that child. Our approach serves not only children, but their parents and caregivers as well:

For young children in unhealthy situations, we provide a range of mental health counseling styles to help children succeed and move on to become healthy, full functioning adults. For parents and caregivers we inform and empower through psycho-education, training, listening and recognizing strengths. Small Steps works to help parents succeed in relationship with their children. Contact Us

You are your child’s emotional anchor.

When the world feels big, fast, or overwhelming, they look to you to help them feel safe enough to calm down.

Not because you have all the answers.
Not because you always get it right.

But because your steady presence tells their nervous system:
“You’re not alone.”

That is the work.

And when you don’t feel steady? That’s okay. Anchors aren’t flawless. But every repair you make is another message of safety and connection.

🤍 Gentle parenting isn’t about perfection—it’s about relationship.

👉 More on co-regulation, repair, and connection in my book Guidance from The Therapist Parent (link in bio or search on Amazon worldwide).

AI, ICE, and Confused Kids: Why We Can't Believe Everything We See

The news is scary right now. Between the headlines about ICE, the divide in our country, and AI creating images that look 100% real (even when they aren't), it is hard to know what to trust.

If adults are feeling overwhelmed, imagine how our kids feel.

It is getting harder to tell fact from fiction. That is why we can’t just let our kids soak up media without talking about it. On Early Risers Podcast, we talked with Dr. Faith Rogow about a skill that is more important today than ever: asking questions.

Dr. Rogow says we shouldn't just shield kids from the news—we have to teach them how to handle it. She calls it a "habit of inquiry." This means teaching kids to pause and ask questions before they believe what they see on a screen.
