Pain in the ball of the foot can be caused by overuse injuries, such as Morton's neuroma, a benign, but painful thickening of the tissue around the nerves between the third and fourth toes; sesamoiditis, an inflammation of the sesamoid bones and the tendons in which they're embedded; and bursitis, an inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs that cushion the metatarsal bones.
