This week, we were so pleased to bring together our Premedical Enrichment Program (PrEP) alums for our PrEP Alumni Panel! 🥼

Students who completed PrEP participated in workshops and skills sessions surrounding adult learning theory, standardized approaches to test performance and self-evaluation, metacognitive skills, clinical service learning, clinical mentorship, introduction to clinical skills, and utilizing advanced biochemistry curriculum as an architecture for a basic science foundation.

Thank you, super star alumni, for sharing your experiences. We are always happy to support our future healthcare profession leaders!

Today is the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month! 🌟

The University of New Mexico Health and Health Sciences is proud to celebrate and acknowledge Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15th to October 15th. Hispanic Heritage Month honors the cultures, achievements, and contributions of Latina/Latino/Latinx/Latine and Hispanic communities. It also serves as a time to reflect on issues affecting Hispanic and Latino communities and to honor their cultural heritages as they are interwoven into our nation’s history and its future.

Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15th, which is the anniversary of independence for several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Additionally, the countries of Mexico, Chile, and Belize celebrate their independence days within the same week.

As of July 1, 2023, 65.2 million people in the U.S. ethnically identify as Hispanic or Latino, which makes communities of Hispanic or Latina/Latino/Latinx/Latine origin the largest ethnic minority in the country – 19.5% of the total U.S. population. To bring this point closer to home, our state of New Mexico has the highest percentage of Hispanics in the U.S., with almost 50% of the New Mexico population identifying as Hispanic.

We want to extend a huge congratulations to one of our student employees, Samata Alhassan, for successfully completing her Public Allies New Mexico term with our office and sharing her insights and experiences at the end-of-term presentation!

Through her work in our office, Samata has excelled in demonstrating leadership principles, and she distinctively embodies the six core values of Public Allies: diversity & inclusion, integrity, focus on assets, collaboration, continuous learning, and innovation.

We are grateful to the support of Public Allies and the UNM Community Engagement Center for continuing to provide leadership opportunities to New Mexicans to create a just and equitable society.

This summer, our Communities to Careers (C2C) program scholars had an amazing learning experience with UNM Lifeguard! Our students participating in C2C's Undergraduate Health Sciences Enrichment Program (UHSEP) and Health Careers Academy programs in Albuquerque and Santa Fe Indian School were provided with real-world preparation, training, and experiences that they will carry with them throughout their healthcare career journeys! 💪🚑

As always, we truly appreciate the cross-collaborative relationships through UNM and beyond in ensuring our learners have the best opportunities to grow and thrive!

Did you know that 35 years ago today, President George H. W. Bush signed into law the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)?

The ADA gives civil rights protections to individuals with disabilities similar to those provided to individuals on the basis of race, color, s*x, national origin, age, and religion. It guarantees equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities in public accommodations, employment, transportation, state and local government services, and telecommunications.

Disability activists worked hard advocating for the ADA to be enacted through sit-ins at health agency buildings across the U.S., blocking buses that did not accommodate wheelchair users, testifying in front of Congress, lobbying representatives and senators, and more.

Lastly, the ADA has sent a ripple effect around the world. Since 2000, at least 181 countries have passed disability civil rights laws similar to the ADA.

Our Professional Achievement for Transdisciplinary Health (PATH) Emerging Scholars always enjoy taking a trip to EMS Farms! 🌱🌽🌻

This summer, as part of the PATH curriculum, our future health care leaders became more knowledgeable about local food systems, now understand the importance of food as medicine, and experienced first hand how community-building addresses and rectifies barriers to health and wellness.

As always, we extend a huge thank you to Ansley and the growers at EMS Farms for welcoming our students and sharing knowledge on how to best care for our farms and each other.

Step into the world of young changemakers! 🌟

Through September 30th, we are excited to be hosting the vibrant and heartfelt artwork and reflections of Albuquerque Public Schools' Garfield Middle School students who are a part of the "Circle Keepers," a group of trusted students who lead restorative circles for their peers. Through artistic expression, we highly encourage everyone to see how the students share their perspectives on mental health, inclusion, and building a compassionate community. ❤

The exhibit is currently in the lobby of the Domenici Center for Health Sciences Education - West building at 1001 Stanford Dr NE, Albuquerque, NM 87131. You also have the opportunity to meet these young, inspiring artists on September 3rd, 4pm-5pm at the Artist Reception!

Thank you to the continued partnership with UNM Health Sciences Library & Informatics Center, The University of New Mexico School of Medicine's Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, UNM Department of Family and Community Medicine, and UNM HSC Wellness.

Many congratulations to ENLACE Statewide Collaborative, El Centro de la Raza, us at UNM HSC Office for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, and to our partner at National Hispanic Institute for successfully hosting the statewide 2025 Dionisio “Dennis” Chavez New Mexico Lorenzo de Zavala (LDZ) Youth Legislative Session for high school students!

This year's 180 student cohort learned and engaged in key leadership roles focusing on civic engagement and leadership, and they developed professional, personal, and business skills through asset-based community equity building in their quest to envision the future of New Mexico.

By honoring Sen. Dennis Chavez, a groundbreaking figure in U.S. politics, NHI has forged a new identity for its flagship New Mexico program.

The UNM Health Sciences Center Office for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion will be closed tomorrow, Friday, July 4th in observance of Independence Day.

The United States observance of Independence Day has long been a symbol of freedom and democratic values. Additionally, we understand that because this country is made up of diverse communities, experiences, and perspectives, complicated feelings about this holiday may arise.

We invite you to be open to reflect on the entirety of America’s history, including its triumphs and shortcomings, and to think about how we can all do our part to ensure this country and the land we inhabit realizes a brighter future for all.

Next Wednesday, July 9th at noon on Zoom, Join Belinda Deneen Wallace, PhD, Associate Professor of English and Director of Liberal Arts & Integrative Studies Program at UNM for her presentation on Medieval literature and Caribbean reparations.

Wallace’s presentation explores the intersections between medieval literary logics and Caribbean nations’ present-day calls for reparations. Wallace will reveal how Middle-Ages’ narratives on race, religion, and conquest were reliant on notions of “worthiness” that continue to obstruct meaningful reckonings with the past, rendering justice not impossible, but certainly (and systematically) deferred.
