had another incredibly successful year at ! From pediatric dermatology at Society of Pediatric Dermatology to rural health skin cancer disparities and everything in between, our numerous posters, case presentations, faculty lectures, research collaboration, committee work, career mentoring, and session attendance represented the vital work we do so beautifully this year - and we showed up for each other in a huge way too. Thank you to everyone who supports us at AAD, in New Mexico and beyond. Until next year!

hosted our fabulous Annual Department Reception in Denver, Colorado on Saturday evening at Tamayo- what an excellent time to connect (and reconnect!) among current UNM SOM students, residents and faculty, research staff, alumni, former faculty, and community colleagues - and we were blown away by the turnout this year! The opportunity for professional networking is invaluable in our mission to transform dermatology in New Mexico and beyond.
We invite you to help us keep our Departmental initiatives like this going with a gift of any level using the QR code. We can’t wait to see everyone in 2027 in San Francisco - We are already making plans! Salud!

represented at the pre-AAD Society of Pediatric Dermatology (SPD) meeting and the Medical Dermatology society meeting today in Denver, CO!

Chair, Dr Aimee Smidt, served as a SPD course director, helping to coordinate the session including a talk by Mallory Quetawki (Zuni Pueblo), an artist / training specialist with the Community Environment Health Program from UNM College of Pharmacy. Her talk was on “Art as a vehicle for health communication and patient engagement.”
UNMSOM student Melanie Jun, also presented a Case of the year with incoming resident fabiola Ramirez on orbital DFSP in a child.

As always, these annual meetings are always such a great time to reconnect with alumni, colleagues, and students. We look forward to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) Annual Meeting to follow! Stay tuned!

conducted two free skin cancer screenings in Taos last weekend and was able to reassure and educate those who attended about normal skin findings and signs of skin cancer. These free screenings are pivotal in our state as many would not have been able to access Derm services otherwise. Thank you to Schreiber Family Medicine and Taos Ski Valley for hosting us, the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center Shannon Shaw Fund, AAD Spot Me Skin Cancer campaign, and our very own Ryan F. Daniell Memorial Fund for making these important community initiatives possible, as well as our excellent learner volunteers. Look forward to details about our next screenings happening in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho on May 2! ⛱️🏔️☀️

was privileged to join the UNM HSC DEI Native American Healthcare Career Expo last month. Dr Samantha Herbert (PGY-2), Dr Larimar Rodriguez (PGY-3), Dr Aimee Smidt (Professor & Chair), Dr Kim Artounian (PGY-4), and Oma Edeh (UNMSOM MD PhD Candidate) led attendees through a series of workshops ranging from suturing, dermoscopy, and punch biopsies. We look forward to doing this every year to continue to reach traditionally underserved populations in our communities. It is through initiatives like this that we are truly transforming Dermatology in NM. 🏜️
