is so very proud to unveil the newly expanded Mohs surgical procedural suites in our UNMH Dermatology Clinic. We celebrated on Friday 8/22 with colleagues, donors, UNMSOM and UNMH leadership for a formal ribbon cutting at our beautifully renovated space with gratitude to everyone who supported this initiative to completion. Through improving access to the highest quality surgical care for patients and providing the most modern medical faculty for surgical training for learners, together we are transforming Dermatology in NM. hosted Dr. Sancy Leachman from University of Utah Department of Dermatology today for our Departmental Grand Rounds, in conjunction with our UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, on "Oregon's War on Melanoma: A Statewide Public Health Experiment” with an emphasis on how we at can use evidence-based approaches to melanoma awareness, detection, surveillance and public health strategies. Our group of learners and faculty were also fortunate to network with Dr Leachman over traditional New Mexican food! Join for Grand Rounds this Friday 8/22 with Dr Sancy Leachman! 🚨

Dr. Sancy A. Leachman, MD, PhD, is a renowned physician-scientist and Vice-Chair of Faculty Engagement in the Department of Dermatology at the University of Utah and Chair of the Southwest Oncology Group’s Melanoma Prevention Working Group.
Dr Leachman’s research is centered around patients at high-risk for developing melanoma, with an emphasis on familial melanoma syndrome. She is most interested in prevention, early detection, and chemoprevention of melanoma, particularly in genetically predisposed melanoma families, and in developing diagnostic tools, prognostic indicators, and/or targeted agents for the prevention of melanoma. She has received grant funding from a number of foundations, including the Doris Duke Charitable Trust, the Department of Defense, and the NIH via R03 and R01 awards.
Dr Leachman earned M.D., and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Dallas, Texas; completed Dermatology residency and fellowship in cutaneous oncology at Yale University. After fellowship, she was recruited to the University of Utah to build a new melanoma program, and ultimately became Director of the Melanoma and Cutaneous Oncology Program at Huntsman Cancer Institute, as well as a tenured Professor in the Department of Dermatology. In 2013, Dr. Leachman was recruited to be Chair of the Department of Dermatology and Director of the Melanoma and Skin Cancer Program at Oregon Health & Science University, where she remained until 2025 when she returned to the University of Utah. We welcome Dr. Leachman to New Mexico and look forward to a robust discussion on how her work can help us in our mission to transform Dermatology here!

welcomes Dr. Mariantonieta Tirado Gonzalez, Dermatopathologist! Dr. Tirado Gonzalez has been hired by TriCore Reference Laboratories / Pathology Associates of Albuquerque, with a Letter of Academic Title in the UNM School of Medicine Departments of Dermatology & Pathology. She joins our fabulous faculty Drs. Shelly Stepenaskie and Hillary Elwood and is excited about the opportunity to be part of our fabulous teaching team.

Dr. Tirado Gonzalez earned her MD from Universidad Central de Venezuela’s José María Vargas Medical School and completed training in Dermatopathology and Dermatology at Marienkrankenhaus in Hamburg, Germany. She most recently was Associate Professor of Dermatopathology in the Department of Dermatology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, in Memphis. We are so grateful to have her join us!
