Parent Spotlight: Growing Skills. Building Independence. Changing Lives.
There’s nothing more meaningful than hearing directly from families about the real impact our work makes. This week, one parent shared how proud they are of their adult son — and how grateful they feel for the support he receives through LifeROOTS.
Because with the right coaching, encouragement, and on-the-job support… skills grow, confidence grows, and independence grows.
Their message was simple but powerful:
“Our son, who has autism, began receiving services from LifeROOTS in September 2017. At the time, he was trying to seek employment on his own but was experiencing difficulties. Someone recommended LifeROOTS, and their support became a turning point in his journey. LifeROOTS played a vital role in helping him secure a position and provided consistent coaching, remaining a reliable, empowering presence in his work life. One notable contribution was advocating our son to carry a radio, enabling better communication with supervisors and team leaders, a small adjustment that made a big difference in his ability to thrive.”
These words remind us why we show up — why our employment coaches go above and beyond, why community partnerships matter, and why meaningful work is one of the greatest gifts we can offer.
Every shift. Every task. Every smile.
It all builds toward a future where people of all abilities can thrive in the community and contribute their talents.

Seeing stories like Brandon Bargo’s always stops me in my tracks.

Building Pathways, Changing Lives: How Collaboration Expands AbilityOne® Opportunities

Work is more than a job at LifeROOTS; it's a turning point. It's confidence. It's connection. And it's possible because of collaboration.

Every success story we share begins with collaboration among LifeROOTS, New Mexico's Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, other state agencies, and a growing network of inclusive employers that understand the power of ability. We're helping each other grow AbilityOne® job pathways that open up opportunities for people with disabilities to build skills, create income, and thrive in their communities.

It starts with preparation.
DVR and their state partners provide individualized vocational assessments, along with skill training and workplace readiness coaching. These agencies help identify each person's strengths and career goals so that, in case an opportunity does come along, the candidate will be prepared to succeed.

Then, collaboration turns preparation into opportunity.
At LifeROOTS, we work directly with employers throughout Albuquerque and beyond—from federal and municipal agencies to private businesses—to identify roles that best match those strengths. Whether maintaining city facilities, providing custodial services through our janitorial contracts, or supporting office operations, each position is specifically designed to offer real-world experience, advancement opportunities, and a supportive team environment.

Support extends well past day one.
Once placed, LifeROOTS job coaches and supervisors remain active in the process. We make sure employees have what they need to be successful and partner with employers on reasonable accommodations, adjust training as appropriate, and celebrate successes along the way. Such an ongoing partnership means people don't just find jobs, they build sustainable careers.

Amplifying Impact Through AbilityOne® and SourceAmerica®
At LifeROOTS, an AbilityOne® producing nonprofit, we are building jobs that connect purpose with possibility. Guided and supported by SourceAmerica, through the Marketing and Social Media Support Grant, we are sharing the stories that show what's possible when nonprofits, state systems, and employers work as one.
These collaborations have generated sustainable results that are quantifiable in terms of increased job placements, better retention rates, and numerous stories about residents who have grown in confidence and independence. When agencies, businesses, and nonprofits come together, we do more than create jobs. We create pathways to a life with purpose, pride, and possibility.

🌟 Expanding Job Pathways Through Partnership 🌟

At LifeROOTS, every new partnership becomes a bridge — connecting people with disabilities to real careers through the AbilityOne® Program.

Our collaboration with local employers, the New Mexico Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR), and state agencies forms a structured, hands-on process that transforms potential into progress:

1️⃣ Referral & Assessment – DVR counselors refer candidates who are ready to work but need support finding the right fit. Together, we review each person’s skills, interests, and work tolerance.

2️⃣ Training & Readiness – Our LifeROOTS team provides on-the-job readiness coaching, from safety and time management to workplace communication and specialized training for federal contracts.

3️⃣ Placement in AbilityOne Jobs – Once participants demonstrate readiness, they’re placed in paid employment on AbilityOne contracts — often in secure federal buildings or city facilities, where they work alongside LifeROOTS job coaches and supervisors.

4️⃣ Ongoing Support & Growth – We stay involved long after placement. Job coaches and supervisors track progress, identify next-step opportunities, and help participants transition into higher-skilled roles or private-sector employment.

Through this model, we’re not just filling positions — we’re creating career pathways that lead to independence, confidence, and long-term success.
