Vaccines save lives.
Some people who use "alternative" therapies such as acupuncture and chiropractic wrongly believe that vaccines are exclusively more dangerous than helpful. This is just not true. I received devastating news today from a client who suddenly lost 3 older dogs to respiratory and digestive illness, and one more dog is fighting for their life as I write this. Pathology reports have determined they died from distemper. This illness is 100% preventable with adaquate vaccination. We rarely see adult dogs catch or die from this illness because most pets are amply vaccinated. Sometimes vaccinating to the point of a differing sort of issue which is immune disfunction. This has led some to a more holistic approach to immunity for common viral issues in animals. With a more holistic approach to vaccination the intent is to vaccinate to effect and then monitor using titers to ensure that protection is adequate. There is much debate over how much is enough, and how much is too much. It is NOT HOLISTIC or safe to abstain from vaccination entirely. These adult dogs caught and died from distemper because they were under-vaccinated and did not get titers often enough to show they were unprotected. If you are going to limit vaccination you MUST check titers. To be safe I would not use Dr. Dodds recommendation of every 3 years, but, rather yearly. A good plan for a holistic approach is to give 2 puppy vaccines three weeks apart and then check titers three weeks after that. This establishes the patient's response. Then you would check yearly and revaccinate if immunity wanes for parvo or distemper. In my world of medicine/Traditional Chinese medicine- vaccines are a heat toxin, and viruses are also heat toxins. Heat toxins damage blood and yin causing immune damage in the case of too many vaccines and potentially death from illness in the case of a deadly virus. A singular (or several) vaccine does way less damage than the virus for most individuals. There is individual variation for both virus infection and vaccine sensitivity. With this understanding it is logical, and I hope you understand the reasons why you should be relying on your Drs advice and not on your internet research. Protection from deadly viruses and immune health are in a balance that involves vaccines and titers. I've been looking for a segue here to help my clients and potential clients know the right things to do on vaccination and now I've said my piece on this issue. Believe it or not THE SAME APPLIES TO COVID VACCINES. It is for this reason (and many others) that I require clients to be fully vaccinated for covid to accompany your pet into the clinic and if you are not or cannot be then I will help your pet by curbside only for both our sakes. Peace and health to you and yours. Prayers for the dog who is still fighting for his life.
