To OmniSleep Patients That Use Respironics CPAP, BiPAP, and ASV Machines:
Dear patients,
Yesterday, Phillips-Respironics issued a notice of recall of most of their CPAP, BiPAP, ASV machines manufactured prior to April 26th, 2021. We are contacting patients as a courtesy to help them learn how to get information directly from Phillips Respironics about the recall.
Respironics has told owners of these machines to contact their DME provider. However, they have given OmniSleep no other information other than what Respironics has issued on their site (see the link below).
We realize that this is frustrating for our patients. We don't know if Respironics will repair / replace units. OmniSleep likely won't be involved in that process. Given the large number of PAP users effected, and the limited information and staff we have, we kindly ask our patients to refer to the Respironics web page (below) and register their machine for any repair / replacement they may make available.
The problem:
These machines have a foam padding which was designed to make them run more quietly during operation. The problem is that the foam can outgas and also break down and there is apparently some risk of inhaling molecules or particulates of the foam. Ozone cleaners such as SoClean may break down the foam faster than normal. Respironics says that they have no reports of harm to individuals, but that they issued the recall out of caution.
Here is what OmniSleep patients should know:
The manufacturer has made recommendations to users of the effected machines on their website:
https://www.usa.philips.com/healthcare/e/sleep/communications/src-update
Respironics wants owners of these machines to register their name and machine serial number in order to get in line for a repair or replacement. It appears that registration is not yet functional on their site, but they do give a phone number to call. Keep checking the web page because Respironics says the registration function should go live in a few weeks.
It us up to patients to determine if they wish to continue to use their PAP machines until the anticipated repairs or replacements are available. OmniSleep providers and staff cannot make this decision for our patients.
