One of the amazing benefits of participating in the apprentice fellowship program at Casa de Salud is the exposure to issues our local community is facing in the South Valley. In 2023, the Census Bureau found that 11.6% of South Valley residents were uninsured. One of our youngest apprentice fellows, Adriana, is organizing a health fair at South Valley Academy as part of her senior project addressing access to healthcare. Her goal is to provide resources and information to one of Casa’s largest client populations—uninsured patients. Adriana invites anyone who would benefit from these resources to attend her health fair at SVA this Wednesday April 23rd!

Uno de los increíbles beneficios de participar en el programa de Apprentice Fellowship Casa de Salud es la exposición a los problemas que enfrenta nuestra comunidad local en el South Valley. En 2023, la Oficina del Censo descubrió que el 11.6% de los residentes del South Valley no tenían seguro médico. Una de nuestras Apprentice Fellowship más jóvenes, Adriana, está organizando una feria de salud en la South Valley Academy como parte de su proyecto de fin de curso sobre el acceso a la atención médica. As we enter 2025, we’d like to share a bit about how we understand our work inside the rapidly changing landscape of access to care. As the world around us continues to reveal the deep cracks and fissures at both the root and at the surface of our nation, the kind of local and direct care that Casa de Salud provides is more necessary now than ever. A majority of our patients are uninsured, most of the rest of our patients are on Medicaid. In addition, many of our patients are from communities that have been under attack or are coming under attack in the coming months, and we are steadfast in our dedication to provide important care for all of us.

We do this work independently, as a nonprofit organization that is not a federally qualified health center and does not receive federal funding for our work. Because of this independence, we are well and uniquely situated to keep powerfully serving our community even as the larger scope of care in our nation is poised to be weakened even further. And, we need your help to keep doing the ground-breaking and dignified work we do of providing fair-priced and accessible care, healthcare advocacy, all while sustaining and growing our staff of employees with generous benefits.

Casa de Salud’s Executive Director and Medical Director Dr Anjali Taneja, will speak at the presentation.

The New Mexico Commission on the Status of Women () is holding its annual Women’s Health Summit at the Isleta Resort and Casino this Friday and Saturday (Nov 8th/9th) - https://nmcsw.org

Our Executive Director Dr Anjali Taneja will speak on a panel on Saturday Nov 9th at 10:15am, “Highlighting Effective Treatments for Substance Use.” She will share her thoughts on this important issue, as well as what Casa de Salud and other orgs have done over the years in harm reduction, treatment, and more. She will also share effective and urgent policy advocacy and organizing work ongoing in New Mexico.

Did you know University of New Mexico Hospital is asking us to vote on renewing a tax we pay that helps cover the costs of care for low-income uninsured people? If we vote for it, UNM Hospital will get more than $120 million per year for the next 8 years. How should UNMH use this money?  Come give your input on Monday, Aug. 26th 5:30-7pm at the International District Library, 7601 Central Ave NE (San Pablo and Central). Spanish interpretation available.

Casa de Salud is a local nonprofit clinic that provides healthcare services for immigrants, low-income and uninsured New Mexicans, queer/transgender community members, drug users, and people seeking treatment and recovery for addictions. In 2022, Casa de Salud had more than 7500 patient visits, the majority of those (around 70%) from patients who were uninsured; the rest were mainly covered by Medicaid.

“So much of the work we do is about building power within the community, not just providing services,” said Executive Director, Anjali Taneja. “We feel that we have a responsibility to do this. That's why we advocate for policy and structural change in addition to providing care.”
