Common myths and misunderstandings about therapists — DEBUNKED! Therapy can seem like such a mysterious process, and that lends itself to occasional assumptions about mental health professionals and their relationship with the work they do. This week, we want to debunk some common myths about therapists and therapy:
• Therapists do NOT have it all figured out — we have specialized training in supporting our clients, but we often have struggled with or are currently struggling with many of the same things as you.
• Therapists aren’t mind readers. We are just as dependent on communication as everyone else!
• We don’t just care about clients’ “problems” — we also enjoy hearing the highlights and celebrating wins with our clients!
• Though deeply fulfilling, our work is difficult and we, list like all workers, deserve to be paid for our labor. This doesn’t negate the deep care we have for our clients!
• Being a therapist is more than just listening to people talk all day. It’s a full-body job that requires a great deal of cognitive and emotional labor, both in and outside of sessions.
TL;DR — Therapists are human, just like you! We also love the opportunity to be human alongside you 💚

Happy Mental Health Monday! The holidays are upon us, and with that comes the need for appropriately-suited self-care. This can come in the form of caring for:
❄️ your social needs by spending time around people who bring you joy
❄️ your financial needs by sticking to your holiday budget
❄️ your mental and emotional needs by maintaining boundaries and saying “no” when needed
❄️ your mental, physical, and emotional needs by giving yourself unconditional permission to eat
❄️ your mental and emotional needs by being in the present moment
❄️ your mental and emotional needs by releasing the expectation of a “perfect” holiday.

We wish for everyone to have a joyful, present, and pleasant holiday season — and your self-care can play a big role in that!

We’ve made it to another Furrapist Friday! If you’re in need of some puppy love and physical touch, Charlie’s your girl. She thinks she’s a lap dog and LOVES to give kisses! In her free time, you can catch her snuggling with Bear (her emotional support stuffed animal) or going for a hike in the Sandias.

Join us every Furrapist Friday to meet more of Age to Age’s four-legged companions!

113 people lost their lives due to anti-transgender violence and discrimination in the United States in the past year. 113 people would probably still be here if they had had access to spaces where trans people were seen, heard, valued, and loved — something all people are deserving of. Everyone deserves to live authentically and without fear. We stand in solidarity with members of our LGBTQIA+ community. 🏳️‍⚧️

On a cold and wintery day like today, who amongst us doesn’t want to snuggle up with a book and embrace the urge to hibernate? This Therapist Thursday we asked our clinicians to share the books they most often recommend to clients, and boy howdy, did they deliver! Here is your (incomplete) list of mental health-related book recommendations from our clinicians here at Age to Age Counseling. 📚 Let us know which of these you’ve read or are adding to your list — bonus points if you pair them with a cup of hot chocolate!
