Divining Your Calling

This form of scrying uses a candle flame and a mirror. It's a great divination for finding your calling— perhaps for life or perhaps just for the present. You will need:

A chair to sit in
A table
A white taper candle, any size, in a holder
A mirror, big enough to see your head and upper body
Matches or lighter
Position the chair at the table. Place the candle near the center of the tabletop. Place the mirror on the other side of the candle so you can see your reflection. If you're using a wall-mounted mirror, place the table and chair near enough to the mirror so you can clearly see your head and upper body.

Light the candle. All other lights in the room should be out. Look through the candlelight at your reflection in the mirror for a few seconds. While doing this, say:

Light, illuminate my true path.

Darkness, let me see.

Then blow out the candle. It's believed that when you are suddenly plunged into darkness, you will see yourself wearing the clothes of your true calling or holding items related to this path.

Connecting to the Spirit of Place

The "spirit of place" refers to the energy within the area where you reside. This can include the earth, trees, weather, animals, and even the people. Understanding the spirit of place takes work, meditation, and time. This simple spell is designed to aid in making that connection.

Get a brown candle and place it somewhere in nature where you will be able to retrieve it. You can find a spot on the ground where few people go, hide it in a tree, or conceal it under a rock. Leave it there overnight to absorb the various energies present. The next day, retrieve the candle, along with a small bit of dirt or plant material from the area. Be sure not to disturb any wildlife. Place the candle in a holder and surround its base with the earthy bits you collected. Every time you light the candle, you are drawing the spirit of place to the flame by honoring and acknowledging it. Light it for a few minutes per day until it is gone.

Animal Companion Blessing

Our pets give us so much affection and joy. Today is Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day, a time to honor beloved animal companions who have crossed over and to do a spell of protection for our living pets. Gently stroke your animal friend from the top of their head to right before their tail in a soothing manner. When your pet is relaxed, raise your dominant hand (the one you write with) to the sky to receive energy. Place your receptive hand on your pet. Channel the energy into your friend and chant:

My Dear One, I love you so,
You'll be safe where'er you go.
I bless you as you sit with me,
As my will, so it must be.

For additional safety, whisper this spell into an amulet of protection to be worn on your buddy's collar. The amulet can be a charm, the pet's name tag, a pentagram, a Mjölnir (Thor's hammer) or other symbol of faith, or even your animal companion's license tag.

Boosting Mobile Communication

In the modern era, we find ourselves surrounded by information. We are constantly bombarded with emails, texts, snaps, tweets, and more. Responding to them can sometimes seem like a daunting task, especially when you feel like what you are trying to communicate could be misinterpreted. Wednesday is a good day to foster better communication between individuals. Here is a quick spell to help the intent of your words to get through.

Read the message carefully. See what the sender is saying and what they need from you in response. Thoughtfully compose your response, and read it through twice. Doing your due diligence beforehand will help your spell be more successful. Before hitting the send button, say:

Let my intent ring true, so my words do not go askew.

Send your message with confidence.

Make Your Own Luck

Today is Make Your Own Luck Day. One of the best ways to make your own luck is to remain optimistic. Sure, you can carry a lucky penny or place a horseshoe above your door, but you already have everything you need for good luck. The most potent and magical ingredient or element of any spell is always you. Lucky people have an inherent belief that they are, in fact, lucky. This spell will help you increase your optimistic attitude.

Get a lodestone or a small magnet. Place it on your altar or other sacred space to attract good luck energy. Safely light a small white tealight candle and then chant these words to reinforce your belief in your own luck:

The luck I attract begins with me.
I believe good luck and opportunities will be attracted to me.

Extinguish the candle. Remember that you have the internal power that fuels all of your personal luck and magick.

Mining the Energy of Habits

Write down your goal as concisely as possible, such as "perfect new job." Be sure to focus on what you do want, not what you don't (for example, "short work commute" rather than "no more long work commute").

Next, choose an easy habit, like drinking coffee or brushing your teeth, and focus on your written down goal while doing this activity. For example, you might tape the goal to your bathroom mirror, gazing at it while brushing your teeth, visualizing the energy of brushing empowering your goal (imagine the words expanding into the cosmos with each swipe of your toothbrush).

Once the goal and the habit are linked, each time you carry out this activity, give thanks for already having achieved your goal—for instance, saying to yourself, "I love my perfect new job. Thank you!" Picture enjoying the new job, making regular deposits to this energy each day.

When/if you want to unlink the goal and habit, simply tear up and dispose of the written-down goal, intending that the two are now disconnected.

Sunday Miracles

The Oxford Dictionary of Phrase and Fable defines a miracle as "a surprising and welcome event that is not explicable by natural or scientific laws and is therefore considered to be the work of a divine agency." I believe miracles occur every day.

They say that what we focus on grows. Start the day with a moment of quiet focus to invoke the miraculous. Vow to pay attention to the "surprising and welcome events that are not explicable" today. Find treasures as you walk. See miraculous flowers blooming. Delight in butterflies and hummingbirds visiting the zinnias and sunflowers. Celebrate the vibrant dance of nature in its late summer beauty. Can you find a wild raspberry or pluck a calendula flower to tuck behind your ear? Hunt for a fossil in a pile of stones, and look through your eyelids at the sun. Miracles surround us. Today, attune to the miraculous, and see it.

Trouble Be Gone Spell
