Get Familiar Spell

This is National Pet Day, but for witches, select animals we live with are revered working partners called familiars. Animals and humans have long been involved in a symbiotic relationship. We feed each other in various ways. If you are unaware of the power and magick inherent in a familiar, take some time to learn about it. If you are not allowed to have animals where you live, get creative. You could have a strong animal's presence in the way you dress (animal prints, colors, and textures), or you could have a sculpted or stuffed animal be a part of your magickal workings. The sky is the limit! For those with a familiar already, why not set aside the day to appreciate it? Have a ceremonial meal of appreciation with each of your preferred foods. Make it extra special.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T Success Spell

This spell deals with self-respect. When you respect yourself, others will automatically have more respect for you. You'll need some coarse sea salt, some rose petals, a rose quartz stone, and a bath or shower (preferably a bath). Place the salt and petals in the tub and fill it up (you can add a drop of rose essential oil if desired). Enter the tub holding the rose quartz. Say out loud:

Powers of the Moon and Sun, let me shine to everyone.

Still clasping the stone, immerse yourself completely in the water for as long as you can hold your breath. Rise, towel yourself dry, and go about your day, putting the rose quartz in a safe place until you want to do the spell again for another boost of confidence. If you are showering, place the salt and petals in the shower pan and hold the stone while you hold your breath as the water falls on you.

National Name Yourself Day is April 9th. Is it time to try a new name and perhaps even a new persona? Have you ever thought about what name you'd choose for yourself if you could? Your name might convey who you are and what you believe, forming a big part of your identity. What we call ourselves and ask others to call us is a powerful and complex undertaking. Naming ourselves may involve profoundly personal reflections, private or public rituals, and even changes to legal documents.

All you need for this spell is a mirror. Repeat this incantation as many times as you wish as you look into the mirror:

I am ____ (your name). My name is _____ (your name). I step into my life fully as _____ (your name).

Courage Spell

Harness the powerful passion and radiant force of Aries season with this simple candle spell for courage, strength, will, and discipline.

You will need:

A red pillar candle in glass
Black tea (You can cut open a tea bag.)
Coffee grounds
Cinnamon
Turmeric powder

Prepare your candle by cleansing it with sacred smoke. As you prepare to begin your crafting, breathe into your heart space and sense the inner flame of your soul. Allow your breath to feed that flame as you begin your work. Hold a small sprinkle of each herb in your hands. Feel the soul-fire of your heart pour up through your chest and course out through your arms, palms, and fingertips, visualizing a strong, steady flame surrounding them with power. When you feel that the energy has infused the herbs, sprinkle them on top of the red candle.

Place your hands over the candle and continue to let out whatever remaining energy is flowing from your soul-fire. Finally, light your candle, allowing the glow of its flame to wash over you. Extinguish the candle when done.

Your Unique Lineage

Today is National Tartan Day, which celebrates the woolen cloth unique to families and geographic areas of Scotland.

Not of Scottish origin? Or made up of a bunch of different national identities? Celebrate your unique lineage today. You will need:

Small items that represent your lineage, such as flags, pins, or cultural icons
A piece of cloth (your family tartan if you have it)
Ribbon or string

Place the items in the middle of the cloth, then gently pull the corners together and tie them.

Invoke:

My tartan speaks of who I am, from whence I came, my origins.
These origins are written inside of me, the indelible ink of eternity.
They make me who I am. Today I celebrate my heritage.
Unique and proudly me.

Plant a Seed Spell

For this spell you will need a packet of seeds (such as a pollinator-friendly wildflower mix), something to plant a few in (a small pot, an old mug, etc.), enough soil to fill the planting vessel, and a few of your own hairs.

Fill your planting vessel with soil and have a glass of water at hand. Hold the packet of seeds while taking a few deep breaths to ground and center yourself. Say:

The power of spring fills these seeds.

Make a fairly deep depression in the soil with your fingers and put your hair at the bottom. Fill in the hole until it's the proper depth for planting a few of your seeds. As you plant a few seeds in your vessel, say:

As these seeds grow, so shall I. The abundance of spring shall come to me. As I do will, so must it be!

Water your seeds and set them in a sunny spot. Take care of your new plant as it grows, transferring it to a larger pot or outdoor space as needed.

Great Mother Stone Dedication

Megalesia commemorates an event from around 204 BCE when a special meteorite from Phrygia was placed ceremoniously on Palatine Hill in the Temple of Victory. This was done by the Romans after one of the Sibyls claimed it could save Rome from losing a war with Carthage. This stone was considered sacred; to the Phrygians it represented the goddess Cybele, whom the Romans called Magna Mater, which means "Great Mother."

The movement of the stone was a success. Crops were bountiful and the Second Punic War ended the following year. Annually, an event called the Megalesia celebrated Cybele with a parade and banquet, games, and other forms of entertainment.

Today, choose a special stone to honor the goddess Cybele (or any Great Mother figure)—even better if you have a piece of meteorite. Dedicate the stone and keep it in a visible place or on your altar. Use this chant in your dedication:

Great Mother, hold us, nurture us in life.
Great Mother, guard us, protect us all from strife.
Great Mother, teach us, help us see your face;
Great Mother, love us, help us learn your grace.

The Earth Abounds Spell

At this time of year where I live, a green mist covers the countryside and every residential street. The buds swell on every tree and shrub. The grass begins to turn green again. The earth abounds. Take time to honor this green cycle and your own wellbeing with this spell. You'll need a new houseplant, a sheet of paper, and a pen. Set the plant on your altar. On the paper, write one to three goals you have. They could be for health or career, for example. Look at the plant. Think about how every plant and tree helps us thrive. Then say:

Thank you, Mother Earth, for the green season.

I see no reason

Why my goals I cannot achieve.

So I am ready to believe and to receive.

As you wait for your goals to manifest, tend to your plant. See it flourish just as your wishes are also growing. Remember, the earth abounds! And so shall your wishes. When your wishes come to you, discard your list. Keep caring for your plant.

Spell for Fun and Whimsy

Use this magick charm to encourage fun and invite a spirit of whimsy and joy into your life. This spell will lighten hearts and create more opportunities for good times and happy feelings. Take a bottle of bubbles outside under the moonlight. Open the bottle and take out the bubble wand. Hold the wand up to the sky and position it so that you see the full moon within the ring of the bubble blower. Dip the wand into the bubble solution, then gaze again at the moon, this time through the sheen of the soap film. Say to the moon:

Hello, moon! Please come and play! Let's laugh and shine from night to day!

Then imagine something silly that makes you smile, and blow gently on the wand to send a bubble toward the moon. Continue blowing bubbles for as long as you like, thinking of something that brings you joy or laughter with each stream of bubbles you send into the night.
