Serve, Innovate, Lead.

“The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of New Mexico is a vibrant and growing center of academic excellence in the beautiful ‘Land of Enchantment.’ Our institutional mission focuses on advancing health in New Mexico through education, clinical service, advocacy and research. The Department of Emergency Medicine has supported this mission since 1987 through its outstanding research, clinical services and innovative educational programs.

Clinically, we serve as the academic tertiary center for New Mexico, the state’s only Level 1 Trauma Center, the only children’s hospital and the safety net hospital for well over a million people. The Department of Emergency Medicine is nationally known for its work in trauma care, pediatric emergency medicine and as a center for excellence in critical care with the largest group of EM trained intensivists in the country. The strong clinical environment provides the foundation for our innovative educational programs of which the 3 year EM residency is the centerpiece. We also have a dedicated EM experience for medical students in the 3rd and 4th years at UNM and electives for rotating students in EM, Toxicology, Wilderness Medicine, Disaster Medicine, EM/Critical Care and EMS. Our research strengths have traditionally included public health, injury prevention, health care policy and pediatric emergency medicine. In the last few years we have started to grow our clinical and translational research core and currently have three faculty members doing translational research in the areas of microbiology and biosensor technology. Our EMS Academy is home to a number of unique training programs including the Air Force Pararescue program, and one of the only UIAA certified Mountain Medicine programs in the country. The UNM EMS consortium provides real time medical direction and physician response across New Mexico and recently took over medical direction for the NPS in the Grand Canyon.

Thank you for visiting and please take some time to explore our page. I have been in the Department of Emergency Medicine at UNM for almost twenty years and I am tremendously proud of our people and our programs.”
