While many managed-care insurance plans require a physician referral from your Primary Care Doctor (P*P), just as many, or more, do not. In the event that your plan does require a physician referral, you are not required to rely only on their recommendation re: which vein specialist to see.

Many physicians are employed by large healthcare systems or networks and are encouraged to refer within the network or system, whether or not that specialist is the most experienced or best fit for your medical needs.
