THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM

The lymphatic system is essential for a healthy body. It is responsible for keeping the tissues of the body clean by removing bacteria, abnormal or damaged cells, and other material that may lead to illness. In addition, it protects us from disease by producing and distributing immune cells. It also helps regulate blood proteins, the building material of all cells. Impairment of lymphatic system may occur after surgery, radiology, trauma or when vessels are malformed. An accumulation of fluid, called lymphedema, is swelling in tissues where the lymphatic system is not able to function normally. Lymphedema increases the risk of infection in affected areas of the body. It leads to discomfort, heaviness, sluggishness, and an overall decreased level of wellness. A treatment called Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is a proven method for managing lymphedema. Lymphatic therapists are trained in specific manual techniques that assist to transport excess fluid from affected areas to areas where function is normal. MLD is often followed by some type of tissue compression to achieve the best result. Linda O'Donnell,PTA (retired), LMT, completed Lymphatic DecongestiveTherapy training at the Dr. Vodder School in Austria in 1994. She has developed, and staffed, treatment programs in hospitals and private practices. She has worked as a program advisors, consultants and as a mentor for oncology massage therapists. She continues to provide treatment now in her office at Sage Therapeutics, 11000 Spain NE, Albuquerque. Phone number: (505) 307-1909 Email: lindaod@centurylink.net

Acupuncture in . This study makes no claims about the potential of acupuncture to treat lymphedema itself, nor to assess the safety of acupuncture skin puncture in the affected or at risk area. The authors worked within the parameters of best practice for the management of lymphedema, in maintaining skin integrity by avoiding skin puncture in an affected area. Thus, this research opens the door to reassuring people with lymphedema that they can safely use acupuncture to address a range of physical and emotional conditions, which increases the options for managing symptomhttps://www.woundsinternational.com/uploads/resources/content_11206.pdf

There are numerous reasons why patients with lymphedema are at an increased risk for infections. Normally the body is protected by a fine acid layer on the surface of the skin, which prevents bacteria and other pathogens from entering. However, the skin in lymphedema tends to be dry and scaly, causi...

On this day, the Vernal Equinox, we are in perfect balance between light and dark. Let us pray loving attention to the fragile sprouts of inner beauty which have survived the long dark of hibernation, despite all odds, to push up through the soil into the light. Let us honour the faith it has taken to believe in the invisible, upper world, where soon we will blossom into sprawling gardens overflowing with fruit. Let us hold our painful hearts with gentle hands today. Let us express our gratitude to the light that can only be found in the dark. Let us ask our vulnerability to shine radiantly with knowing that we are unfolding right on time. - Toko-pa Turner (toko-pa.com)
