As we age, our bodies get banged up, leading to chronic pain and limitations in activity and motion. The more pain we have, the less we move.

Advances in therapies to improve function and relieve pain have revolutionized the way we can and will care for our musculoskeletal system. This is often referred to as regenerative medicine.

I’ve had to rehabilitate myself from decades of chronic pain. With a combination of bodywork, yoga, the TB12 Sports physical therapy and training program, and seeing a regenerative medicine doctor, I have become stronger, fitter, and more pain-free than I’ve been in 30 years.

Here are the top ways to keep your meat suit in good working order and to repair and heal it when you need help.

Engage in regular exercise, including aerobic conditioning, strength training, and flexibility.

Yoga is a powerful way to help your body relieve pain and decrease stress and it can be done at any age.

Supplements can help build muscle, repair tissues and joints, and reduce inflammation. Try omega fats such as Dutch Harbor Omega, which has high levels of inflammation-suppressing resolvins; Zyfla-mend by New Chapter, an anti-inflammatory herbal mixture; collagen peptides; bone broth; and glucosamine.

Work with a physical therapist and body coach if you have chronic issues.

Try massage devices like Theragun or Hypervolt.

Food, real whole food, contains thousands of molecules.

Yes, protein, fat, and carbs; fiber, vitamins, and minerals. But also, tens of thousands of phytonutrients that interact with your biology, controlling critical processes that keep you healthy.

Many of the ancient built-in survival systems encoded in your genes depend on the right balance of nutrients to thrive.

Food has the power to activate these systems of renewal, repair, and regeneration.

Don’t know where to start or what you should be eating?

The USDA announced that it wants to make gradual updates to include "less sugar and greater flexibility with menu planning" between Fall 2025 and Fall 2027.

There is also a push for schools to source more local products, which means fresher food for kids, a stronger local economy, and a smaller environmental footprint. While it’s a shame that this is the first time added sugars will be limited in school lunches, it’s a very exciting change that will hopefully lead to more of the same.

Cereal, yogurt, and milk are three of the greatest sources of added sugars currently provided through school lunches—this plan will specifically address them, plus other common sources of hidden added sugar. I’m looking forward to the positive changes from this implementation and hopeful about the cascade effect it could bring.
