Did you know that your skin is your largest organ?
As our largest organ, it takes in nearly everything we apply to it. On top of that there are plentiful nerve receptors located on that skin that are integral to sensory experiences achieved through our sense of touch. We have different types of nerve fibres innervating our hands and sending messages to the brain, converting “feeling” into “meaning.” So the skin, and our sense of touch can open the gateways to immense healing of our bodily tissues while also penetrating through the more subtle channels of our emotional and mental bodies as well.
Abhyanga, or Ayurvedic oil massage — is an integral part of the daily routine recommended for overall health and well-being. Carefully selected oils are recommended based on your constitution, the season and current imbalances. In Sanskrit, the word Sneha can be translated as both “oil” and “love.” So in Ayurveda, there is an inherent connection between enveloping the body in oil and enveloping it in love. Both experiences can give a deep feeling of stability, warmth, and comfort.
Oil massage may sound like a complicated process, but once you’ve learned the basics, self-massage with oil starts to become second-nature. For me the effects are noticeable instantly, and they only get sweeter overtime with consistency. But this practice is always one that I come home to.

D H U M P A N A : herbal smoke therapy ⊹ .

Sometimes in Āyurveda we use a blend of herbs and flowers for smoke therapy. A carefully chosen formula is used to help clear and strengthen the lungs, relieve headaches, calm or enliven the mind, and nourish the nervous system. . ⊹ .

The classical texts refer to this technique to prevent the onset of many diseases occurring above the shoulders due to an increase in vata (principle of space & air) or kapha (principle of water & earth). One of the main ways that I incorporate this technique into my practice is for individuals who would like to eliminate to***co, ni****ne or ma*****na. And walking around London everyday has reminded me of how many people smoke. . ⊹ .

This therapy is a better alternative to smoking, but it’s also a good way to stop all together. Typically we will do a weening process off the ni****ne and support the system in multiple ways to cope with withdrawal symptoms, cravings and mood or appetite changes. . ⊹ .

I use a mixture of Āyurvedic herbs and western herbs and then add a drop of ghee on top for lubrication and to carry the herb to the tissues. . ⊹ .

It can be helpful to think of herbal smoking blends as three parts:
🌱1. the carrier or base herbs (e.g. mullein)
🌱2. herbs with a specific supportive role for the lungs or nervous system (e.g rose, brahmi, skullcap)
🌱3. herbs used for flavouring (e.g lavender) . ⊹ .

It’s important to remember that smoke is smoke. Its not great for you. And in home herbalism, please do not use any herb in an herbal smoking blend unless you know for sure that it can be safely used in a smoking blend. And always consult a healthcare practitioner :)

Hanumanāsana story time! .

This pose asks you not merely to stretch your legs but also to bring true devotion into your practice. It expresses the expansiveness possible when love, devotion and patience are centered in the heart. . ⊹
During mythological times, Hanuman, the monkey God was a most faithful devotee to Rama, a king of ancient India. His intense devotion allowed him to do the impossible, make giant leaps over the ocean and land between India and Lanka to help Rama and his beloved Sita during the epic Ramayana. . ⊹
Many of us shrink before impossible tasks, or even tasks that are only a bit hard. We forget that there is a part of us that is divine and that can totally accomplish the ‘impossible’… . ⊹
Through our devotion, patience and faith we can move with confidence and leap across oceans, change the world, or just show up to a difficult situation with love.

Happy Friday friends! Go out and stretch those legs, move those mountains and smile big 🌱

It’s cold and rainy. Warm, frothy adaptogenic lattés are on the menu.

What are adaptogens? ⊹

Well, the clue is their name! Adaptogens are a select group of herbs (and some mushrooms) that support the body's natural ability to deal with stress. They literally help the body to adapt, adjust and recalibrate itself depending on our emotional and physical surroundings. They are called adaptogens because of their unique ability to “adapt” their function according to the specific needs of the body. ⊹

Today I used ashwagandha, otherwise known as Withania Somnifera or Indian Ginseng. Although this herb is pretty popular mainstream, it has been used for over 5,000 years in Ayurvedic herbalism. This adaptogen targets the nervous system and endocrine system. It helps the functions of the adrenals, thyroid, and reproductive organs while also assisting in hormone balance, stress relief and calming the mind. don’t forget, its an adaptogen, so your body will use it how it needs to! ⊹ ⊹ .

⊹ ⊹ In today’s mug:⠀
- 1 cup oat milk ⠀
- 1 tsp Ashwagandha ⠀
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon ⠀
- 1/2 inch fresh scooped vanilla bean ⠀
- generous pinch of cardamom ⠀
- drizzle of honey ⠀

⊹ What is a postpartum doula?⠀

Postpartum doulas provide emotional and physical support to new mothers and new families. They are basically that missing experiential guide during a time when most people find themselves at a loss for information and need hands-on support.⠀

Ayurveda believes that the first 42 days following birth are considered the most precious time for healing and preparing the mother for stepping gracefully into her new role. ⠀

This period is supportive to the entire family, but primarily focuses on tuning into the needs of the mother and helping her to thrive. Proper care during this time can protect from exhaustion, depletion, and postpartum blues and anxiety, rebuild delicate post-birth digestion, help strengthen tissues, and support plentiful breast milk and a stronger emotional bond with your baby.⠀

⊹ Support offered:⠀
- Feeding and breastfeeding support⠀
- Mother-infant & parent bonding⠀
- The mother’s physical healing process ⠀
- Mother and infant oil massage ⠀
- Nutritional guidance and home cooked meals ⠀
- Providing a safe emotional container: Postpartum doulas help to create a safe and non-judgmental environment for new parents to comfortably move through their emotions⠀
- We’re there to help normalize, reframe, and reassure!⠀

⊹ I visited this man’s apothecary in his home in Varanasi. I was welcomed by his entire family and beautiful cow as I entered his family compound. We walked into a back room adorned with bottles and bottles of essential oils and different dilutions of potions that have been in his family for generations. He’s been making his own essential oils since he was a child and learned the craft from his father. We sat together smelling the oils, some I knew very well and others I had never heard of. We sipped chai, talked about spirituality and put oils all over our arms until there were no more “blank canvas” spaces. Its one of the best memories I have from my time in that ancient city. ⠀ ⊹

Essential oils are getting a lot of hype lately. I’m all about using them with proper knowledge for treating imbalances in both the physical and subtle bodies. They can help address sleep issues, anxiety, skin problems, digestive upsets, headaches and much more. ⊹

Whether you are diffusing, taking internally, diluting, adding them to you cooking or using them in beauty products and cleaning supplies it’s very important to source your oils from the right place, knowing when they are internally consumable and not adding things to your airways or body loaded with chemical crap. Even many of the oils marketed as “totally natural” are totally not. Make sure you check the ingredients🌱

Are you working with essential oils!? Is there a company you like best?
How do you like to use them?

♡ Hrid Basti ♡⠀

Hrid Basti is an Āyurvedic treatment for the heart, both the physical heart and the emotional heart. ⠀

♡⠀

Hrid refers to hridaya, the space of the heart. Basti means container. So I’m essentially creating a safe little container out of organic flour around the heart space. This dough acts as a reservoir that is placed over the sternum covering marma points (vital energy centres) and the heart chakra. Then warm, medicated, herbal oils are poured inside the reservoir, concentrating healing benefits to the region. ⠀

♡⠀

This treatment is supportive for: ⠀
- heart palpitations, anxiety, nourishing the cardiac muscles, soothing the lungs, ⠀
- its also useful for helping release stored deep seated grief, heartbreak, and nourishing unresolved emotions. ⠀

And it sends you into deep relaxation and bliss like my sweet man is here.

Smoothie talk! This lovely little drink often gets villianized in Āyurveda. But I’m here to bring back it’s glory! With a slight caveat 🌱 .
Smoothies are a wonderful way to get a densely nutritious boost, but the trick is using the right ingredients and enjoying at the proper temp! I know many of you may think this sounds blasphemous, but for the sake of your digestion and the sanity of your Āyurvedic practitioner, please don’t drink an ice cold smoothie!

Imagine a freezing cold, wet blanket being thrown on top of a fire. Not only does the fire go out and get all Smokey, but everyone around it’s warm glow gets cold. This is what happens to your system also. This is especially important during the cold winter months! .
A room temp smoothie allows the body to receive openly the nourishing bliss of all your greens! .
I don’t like to mix in too many fruits as they digest at different speeds and can cause fermentation in your gut leading to toxin build up and digestive concerns. Keep it simple, if you want a fruit smoothie then use similar fruits like berries. .

Made by my sweet smoothie alchemist 💚. 🌱Green green greens Recipe: 🌱
Celery
Cucumber
Kale
Spinach
Avocado (makes it thick and creamy)
Apple (only half for a little sweetness)
Ginger
Lemon

Ayurvedic sore throat magic! ⠀

As we move ever so slowly into the spring (kapha) season, colds are still amongst us. I’ve been hearing lots of coughing while traveling, so here is an ayurvedic remedy to combat a sore throat.⠀

Mix equal parts; triphala, salt and turmeric into a little jar. If you don’t have the triphala, no worries! The salt and turmeric will work excellently on it’s own, triphala simply adds an extra detoxifying and immune boosting burst. Once added to your jar, shake, shake, shake! ⠀

Mix 1/2 teaspoon to 1/4 cup warm water and allow it to dissolve. Then gargle! Continue throughout the day to relieve a nasty sore throat.⠀

Why does it work? This mixture is packed with potent anti-septic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and immune stimulating properties. It’s also got a nice amount of vitamin C from the triphala. ⠀

The things one can do with triphala and turmeric are pretty amazing. This is why I love ayurvedic pharmacology, one herb can be used in so many wonderful ways! ⠀
