On Friday, March 6th, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed HB 99 into law, enacting medical malpractice reforms and ushering in a new era of healthcare.

Dr. Robert Underwood, president of the New Mexico Medical Society, said, “I think it sends a really good signal to physicians and honestly to medical malpractice insurance underwriters, that we are open for business and we’re coming back online, and that’s going to shift the whole culture of health care in the state of New Mexico.”

NMMS was a proud champion of this legislation and we're excited to see the positive impacts these reforms have on New Mexicans' access to healthcare.

Health care leaders from CHRISTUS St. Vincent New Mexico, Presbyterian Healthcare Systems, Presbyterian Española Hospital, and Medical Associates of Northern New Mexico (MANNM) recently came together to discuss healthcare challenges and opportunities in northern New Mexico.

Dr. Madhavi Garimella with MANNM shared that the lack of housing, low Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement rates, and inadequate resources have made recruiting and retaining physicians in the region difficult. The panelists highlighted the negative impact these staffing challenges have on patients' access to high-quality care.

Honest conversations about where our healthcare system needs improvement are a big step towards addressing these challenges with structural change. We're grateful to Dr. Garimella and all of the speakers who participated and made this event possible.

Physicians are called to medicine to be their patients’ strongest ally, providing the expertise and information patients need to make informed decisions.
Their years of education and training make physicians well-equipped to provide high quality health care decisions, yet prior authorization undermines physicians’ treatment decisions.

New Mexico’s physicians want to reform the health care system, to keep treatment decisions between a patient and their doctor. Learn more: https://www.nmms.org/your-care-is-at-our-core/

🎉 Historic day for New Mexico medicine — HB99 is signed into law!

After years of hard work and advocacy, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham today signed the New Mexico Medical Malpractice Reform Act (HB99). This landmark law creates tiered caps on punitive damages and raises the evidentiary standard for malpractice claims — reforms that will lower insurance premiums and help recruit and retain doctors in communities across our state.

A huge thank you to Representative Christine Chandler and Representative Gail Armstrong for their extraordinary leadership, and to every NMMS physician who testified, called, wrote letters, and showed up year after year. This is YOUR victory. 🩺

New Mexico families deserve doctors who are available when they need them. Today, we got closer to that. 🌵
