Our residents visited the local art museum for an insightful exploration of modern art and politics in Germany from 1910 to 1945. The exhibit beautifully captured a transformative era through compelling artwork, complemented by an engaging video presentation. The sound machine offered a unique, immersive glimpse into the period, enhancing our understanding and appreciation of the historical context.

Our community was bewitched by the adorable visit from Pathways Academy this Halloween! Our "resident witches coven" stirred up some magical goodie bags for the students, while other amazing residents volunteered to spookify the candy distribution and host wickedly fun mini-games. The intergenerational connection was enchanting, bringing smiles to both the students and our residents. It was a hauntingly good time for all! Thank you Pathway Academy!

Meet, Shirley!

Shirley, along with her loyal companion Jordan, has swiftly become a cherished fixture in our community. Known for her warm smile and engaging stories, Shirley has endeared herself to many, while Jordan, with her playful antics, has won the hearts of dog lovers throughout the community. Shirley's four children have been instrumental in helping her settle in, offering support and companionship that has made her transition seamless. Her life has been a tapestry of diverse experiences, from living in Columbus, Texas, to nearly every state in the West—including an extended stay in the mountains of Idaho, where she worked as a station agent for Union Pacific Railroad. With her husband, a childhood sweetheart since a young age, she explored Mexico and Canada in their fifth-wheel camper. A collector of unique cookie jars, Shirley ran a business for 10 years, trading with collectors from across the northern hemisphere. She even brought some with her, each jar holding a special memory of her past, She also owned a frame store, teaching and selling frames and paintings for eight years. Her hobbies include hunting, fishing, and a growing passion for studying the Bible. Shirley has brought a piece of her history to share with us, making her not just a resident, but a storyteller weaving the fabric of our community. We all love Shirley and Jordan!

In a creative tribute to America's 250th birthday, Joyce expertly guided participants through a fabric art activity, to soon be submitted for the “Great American Birthday Quilt”. Kathy meticulously aligns the star on the American flag for her fabric square, while Ceci spaces out each of the 13 stars, symbolizing the original colonies. Meanwhile, Roy proudly showcased his New Mexican heritage, representing our state's place within the United States. It is a wonderful way to honor the United States of America!

Meet Carolyn, who has been part of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta since 1996! Her collection of pins tells the story of her time on various balloon crews, each one a memory of early mornings and breathtaking flights. From her first ride in '96 to her last in 2014, Carolyn's photos capture the unique beauty of each balloon she's worked with. Thanks for sharing your amazing experiences, Carolyn!

We dove headfirst into the world of "Survivor" with the official card game, timed perfectly with the season 49 premiere! Our residents loved strategizing, forming alliances, and, of course, the nail-biting tribal councils where they got to vote each other out. The final showdown was intense, with Kathy narrowly defeating Sharon in a 3-2 vote, cementing herself the “Sole Survivor!” It was a blast introducing them to something new, and the game sparked some great conversations. Can't wait for our next adventure!

It is with great pleasure that we shine a spotlight on Rose Barak, a remarkable woman whose journey has now brought her back to Albuquerque, enriching our community with her presence. Born here, Rose's path took her to San Diego in 2016, where she served at the San Diego VA before embracing retirement in 2017. Her journey continued to Corona and Riverside, California, where she lovingly cared for her nephew and later nurtured young minds at KinderCare, retiring just before her return.

Rose's life is a tapestry woven with dedication and service. A proud UNM graduate with a BSN, she also holds an associate degree in nursing from Shepherd University in West Virginia. Her compassion shone brightly when she received the Spirit of New Mexico award in October 2015 for her courageous attempt to aid a fallen officer. Further exemplifying her commitment to others, Rose was among the select few nurses who provided aid after Hurricane Katrina. Her passion for helping others led her to volunteer at an underprivileged clinic, where she embraced Spanish to better serve her patients.

Since joining us on September 7th, Rose has infused our community with her warmth and positivity. She cherishes the kindness of our residents and knew this was home the moment her sister shared it with her. A lover of children, a connector of people, and a talented dancer of hula, Tahitian, and belly dance, Rose embodies the spirit of Albuquerque Grand. We are profoundly grateful to have her as part of our family.
