🌞 Summer Safety Tips for Seniors! 🧓🏽👵🏼
⛱Summer brings sunshine and fun—but the heat can be risky for older adults. Here’s how to help your loved ones stay safe and comfortable:
* Stay Hydrated! 💧
Older adults often drink too little—by the time they feel thirsty, they’re already starting to dehydrate. Encourage sipping water throughout the day (6–8 cups!), even before feeling thirsty
* Keep Cool Indoors. 🚪
Air-conditioning is the best defense—fans often aren’t enough in extreme heat. If AC isn’t available, visit a public cooling center, or make use of shaded spaces
* Dress Smart. 👕
Lightweight, loose, light-colored clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and sunscreen (SPF 30+) help keep skin protected and regulated
* Know the Signs of Heat Illness. 🌡
Watch for symptoms like headache, dizziness, nausea, heavy sweating—or no sweating (a sign of heat stroke). These can escalate fast in seniors.
* Check on Loved Ones Daily. 📱
Seniors may not notice overheating or dehydration. A daily visit or call during heatwaves can help prevent emergencies.
