Such important information!
Last week the AAP released a statement that if you are struggling with Breastfeeding, the first person you should go to is a pediatrician. Here's the problem with that: most pediatricians have less than three hours of lactation training and the good ones only have about 10 hours. They aren't trained to do a full functional assessment and breastfeeding assessment. If you're struggling with Breastfeeding, your first person you get support from should be a lactation professional with over 90 hours of training!
The statement also said oral ties are being corrected to frequently and the only thing that matters is adequate weight gain 🤬 What about mom being in pain? What about speech? What about oral development and airway development? What about reflux and constipation?
Oral ties are so complex and require support from multiple professionals including lactation, chiropractors, cranial sacral therapist, Pediatic dentist or ENT, pediatrician, myofunctional therapist, and a speech or occupational therapist. If they are not corrected they can have life long consequences! Tara and Amanda are not strangers to how oral ties have negatively impacted their lives as adults. We still have lots to learn but to put a blanket statement out there without access to full information is unprofessional.
Organisations like the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine are the professional experts that are continuously researching and improving breastfeeding outcomes. They are the ones to listen to about lactation protocols.
