What does speech therapy look like?
Sometimes, it looks a lot like play!

Why?
Play increases motivation and engagement, creates meaningful learning moments, and helps skills carry over into real life — not just the therapy room.
When therapy feels safe, enjoyable, and purposeful, children are more willing to try, practice, and grow.

Play isn’t a break from learning — it is how learning happens.

✨ If you have questions about speech therapy or want to learn more about our play-based approach, book an evaluation online anytime through the link in our bio.

🧐🤓How many did you get right?

Using 2-Word Phrases
Typical age range: About 24 months (2 years)
• Most children begin combining words into simple two-word phrases like “more juice” or “mama go” around 24 months.
• At age 2–3, toddlers often use two- to four-word phrases as part of normal development.

Understanding & Answering Simple “Who” and “What” Questions
Typical comprehension & answering range: 2–3 years
• Between ages 2 and 3, children begin to understand and answer simple questions like “who” and “what” based on pictures or familiar contexts.
• By age 3, most toddlers start answering questions such as “what do you do when hungry?” indicating increasing receptive and expressive skills.

Answering Simple “Why” Questions
Typical age range: Around 4–5 years
• More abstract reasoning needed for “why” questions usually emerges around 4–5 years when children are able to explain cause–effect and intentions.
Note: Research shows that understanding causality concepts like those behind “why” questions develops later than simpler who/what/where questions.

Telling a Short Story with Beginning, Middle, End
Typical age range: About 4–5 years
• Children around 4–5 years begin to include narrative elements like a sequence of events — a simple beginning, middle, and end — when describing experiences or stories.
• Earlier in development, they may talk about things that happened that very day (e.g., “we go store”), but structured storytelling typically emerges by age 4.

Why isn't my child saying any words yet?
Many parents focus on words - and that makes sense.
But language doesn’t start with talking.
It grows step by step, like climbing a staircase. 🪜💛

If a child skips a step or needs extra support on one level, words can feel harder to reach.
Here’s what those steps look like:

🪜 Step 1: Attention & Connection

Before language, children need to notice people.
Looking at your face, responding to their name, sharing attention on an object — this is the foundation.

🪜 Step 2: Understanding (Receptive Language)

Children learn to understand words long before they say them.
Following directions, responding to familiar routines, and recognizing words all happen here.

🪜 Step 3: Gestures

Pointing, waving, showing, reaching, shaking head — gestures are language without words.
They tell us a child is ready to communicate intentionally.

🪜 Step 4: Sounds & Imitation

Babbling, copying sounds, animal noises, and playful vocalizations build the motor plan for speech.

🪜 Step 5: Words

First words usually come after all of these steps are in place.

Speech therapy doesn’t just teach words.
It strengthens the steps underneath so language can grow more easily and confidently.
