The birth center experience: having a baby at a birth center

What does birth center labor actually look like? Let's walk through it.

Early labor at home: You're having contractions, but they're still manageable. You text or call us with updates. We will guide you on figuring out when to come in—usually when contractions are strong, regular, and you need support.

Arrival: You walk in (or waddle in—no wheelchair unless you want one). We've already prepared your room. Soft lighting. Warm tub ready if you want it. Your space.

Settling in: We check you and baby, but then you lead. Want to walk the halls? Do it.

Eat a snack? Go ahead. Labor in the tub? Absolutely. We're there to support, monitor, and guide—not control.

Active labor: You move, breathe, vocalize. Your partner or doula supports you. We check in regularly, listen to baby's heartbeat, keep you hydrated. Your body sets the pace.

Pushing & birth: You push in whatever position feels right—hands and knees, squatting, side-lying, in the tub, on “dry land”. We guide and support. You can reach down and feel baby's head as you push. You can bring your baby up to your chest yourself.

Immediate postpartum: Skin-to-skin for as long as you want. Delayed cord clamping. We help with first latch. You eat, rest, bond. We monitor you and baby, but we're not rushing you out.

Going home: When you're ready—usually 4-6 hours postpartum—you go home to your own bed. We follow up within 24 hours.

This is birth center care. Supported, safe, and yours.

"But what if something goes wrong?"

This is one of the questions we hear most about birth centers. It's a valid question, and it deserves a thorough answer.

Birth centers are equipped for emergencies.

Birth centers are equipped with:
✓ Oxygen and resuscitation equipment for mom and baby
✓ IV supplies and fluids
✓ Medications for hemorrhage control
✓ Newborn resuscitation equipment
✓ Trained staff in neonatal resuscitation (NRP) and adult emergency care
✓ Emergency transfer protocols with local hospitals

Midwives are trained to recognize complications early. We monitor you and baby throughout labor. If something changes, we act quickly—whether that's starting an IV, administering medication, or coordinating transfer.

Transfer rates are low but important. About 12-16% of birth center clients transfer to a hospital during labor. Most transfers are non-emergent (slow progress, exhaustion, request for pain relief). True emergencies are rare, and when they happen, we're prepared. Our center will be strategically located within minutes of a hospital.

The key is appropriate patient selection. Birth centers serve low-risk pregnancies.
We screen carefully throughout pregnancy, and if risk factors develop, we help coordinate hospital-based care.

Safety isn't about the building—it's about the provider, the protocols, and the preparation.

Birth centers have excellent safety outcomes because they combine skilled midwifery care with emergency readiness and seamless hospital collaboration.

Questions about safety? Drop them below–we’d love to answer them.

Birth Center vs. Hospital vs. Home Birth: let's break down the differences!

We believe that every family deserves the birth setting that's right for THEM. Here's how birth centers fit into the spectrum of care:

🏥 Hospital Birth:
✓ Best for high-risk pregnancies
✓ Immediate access to epidurals, C-sections, higher levels of newborn care
✓ Continuous monitoring, medical interventions available
✗ Often less mobility, eating restrictions, time limits on labor
✗ Higher intervention rates even for low-risk births

🏡 Home Birth:
✓ Ultimate comfort and control
✓ No travel during labor
✓ Familiar environment, your own bed
✓ Emergency equipment brought to home (oxygen, IV, meds, resuscitation)
✗ Requires transfer if complications arise
✗ Not everyone feels safe laboring at home

🏛️ Birth Center:
✓ Homelike comfort with clinical safety equipment
✓ No time limits, freedom to eat/drink/move
✓ Midwifery model, low intervention approach
✓ Emergency equipment on-site (oxygen, IV, meds, resuscitation)
✓ Hospital transfer protocol if needed
✗ Not for high-risk pregnancies
✗ No epidurals (though comfort measures are excellent)

Birth centers fill a gap. They're for families who want:

Low-intervention, physiologic birth
A homelike setting
Clinical safety backup without hospital protocols

Right now, the nearest birth center is nearly an hour away. We're changing that.

"Am I a candidate for birth center care?"

Great question. Birth centers serve low-risk pregnancies—but "low-risk" includes more people than you might think.

You're likely a good candidate if:
✓ You have a singleton pregnancy (one baby)
✓ Baby is head-down
✓ You're between 37-42 weeks
✓ You don't have conditions requiring hospital-level care (like preeclampsia, placenta previa, or certain chronic conditions)
✓ You're looking for physiologic, low-intervention birth

You CAN birth at a birth center if you:
✓ Had a previous C-section (VBAC-supportive!)
✓ Are a first-time mom
✓ Are over 35
✓ Have a history of fast or slow labors
✓ Want pain relief options like water, movement, and positioning (not epidurals)
✓ Have had previous births at a hospital or home

You're NOT a candidate if:
✗ You have twins or breech baby
✗ You have certain high-risk medical conditions
✗ You're under 37 weeks or over 42 weeks
✗ You want/need an epidural or other hospital-based interventions

The beauty of midwifery care is that we follow you throughout pregnancy. If risk factors develop, we help coordinate a safe transfer of care. But most healthy pregnancies stay low-risk.

About 85% of pregnancies qualify for birth center care.

Could that include you? Send us a DM with questions or give us a call: 320-335-1709.
