Help Virginia Nurse Practitioners 🏛 ↓
Contact your legislators in support of HB 971 & HB 983.
As it stands today, NPs in Virginia are required to have 5 years of full-time experience as an NP before they are able to practice autonomously, without a supervising physician.
This practice requirement is the most restrictive in the nation among the states with pathways to autonomous practice.
“Mandated practice agreements with physicians do not involve training from physicians, are not residencies or fellowships, and do not require the physician to practice in the same location as the NP. Instead, they impede an NP’s ability to be mobile within their profession and provide care where it is most needed” (VCNP)
These identical bills (one sponsored by a Democrat, and the other sponsored by a Republican):
- Reduce the requirement to 2 years of experience before the transition to autonomous practice.
- Allow autonomous NPs to oversee patient care teams.
- Allow NPs to practice to the full extent of their nursing education, certification, and training.

Thank you in advance for your support!
