Grief and loss are universal human experiences, but for many marginalized communities, these experiences are compounded by systemic inequities, historical trauma, and cultural stigmas surrounding mourning.
The Grief and Loss section of Cultural Compass, Volume I explores how factors such as racial violence, displacement, and healthcare disparities contribute to both individual and collective grief that often goes unacknowledged in mainstream spaces. This section highlights the importance of culturally responsive, trauma-informed therapy that honors spiritual and communal healing traditions.

In this video, Dr. Tai J. Mendenhall, LMFT, discusses the dynamic and ever-evolving field of Medical Family Therapy (MedFT), highlighting both its exciting growth and its unique ethical challenges. As MedFT continues to expand across interdisciplinary settings, therapists encounter new “ethical territories,” shaped by diverse professional cultures and evolving standards of care. Dr. Mendenhall reflects on how his chapter, “Medical Family Therapy: Ethics in Healthcare Settings,” in the AAMFT Systemic Ethics Textbook, explores these complexities, acknowledging that future editions will inevitably reflect new understandings as the field progresses.

During Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) Awareness Month, it’s vital to consider how depression and anxiety affect children and adolescents—especially within their family systems.
In the AAMFT Handbook of Systemic Family Therapy, Volume II, Part 3: Child and Adolescent Disorders, Jacob B. Priest and Kate Cobb examine how systemic family therapy approaches can more effectively address internalizing disorders in youth by integrating both developmental and family factors.
They highlight three key models—Cognitive Behavioral Family Therapy, Attachment-Based Family Therapy, and Structural Family Therapy—that offer more comprehensive, family-centered approaches to care.

Licensure barriers shouldn’t limit care.

In 2025, 72% of MFTs wanted a license in another state — but only 28% had one. And 61% who tried hit major roadblocks.

AAMFT’s Access MFTs initiative is changing that.

📈 Virginia saw a 246% increase in licensure approvals after adopting Access MFTs — with applications jumping from 9 to nearly 30 per month.

Now 13 states have passed similar legislation, improving portability and expanding access to care.

Modern licensure laws = stronger workforce + better client access.

Learn how Access MFTs is making a real difference.
