Not sure if what the difference is between ADHD or ADD? 🤔

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is no longer a recognized diagnosis and has been replaced by Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Here's a video that explains the 3 main presentations of ADHD (Inattentive, Hyperactive-Impulsive, and Combined), and signs of ADHD in children and teens.

As toddlers become more independent, they tend to push more boundaries. 🤔 While it's a normal part for them to learn about their world, it's important to set limits to keep them safe and help them learn. But as a parent, you probably already know that enforcing rules isn't always easy. Check out this blog👇 for information on how to discipline toddlers while also letting them have some control over their decisions.

"A big part of discipline in the early years is simply keeping kids safe. We don’t touch the oven. We don’t pull on the cat’s tail. We don’t run into the street. But by setting consistent limits early, parents are also laying the groundwork for good behavior in the future.

Setting limits has other benefits, too. Telling children which behaviors you do — and don’t — want to see actually makes kids feel more secure, because it reminds them that you’re in charge and guides them to the areas where they should be developing their skills and independence (such as playing with the plastic tea set and not trying to touch the real one.)"

Learn when and how to discipline toddlers. As they test their independence, setting and enforcing limits lays the groundwork for good behavior.

Going back to work as a breastfeeding parent? 🤱 After having a baby, returning to your previous work routine can be challenging, especially when you're pumping milk. We recommend checking out these tips for expressing breast milk and making the transition as smooth as possible.

"Start back to work in the middle of the work week if possible. This will make it easier for everyone to adjust to the change, since this will provide you with a 2- or 3-day trial period before you take on a full workweek.

Plan ahead to take certain items to work with you each day. Many parents get everything together the night before. You will need your pump, a cooler for transporting and perhaps storing breast milk, and a lunch or snacks to help keep your energy up. You may also want to wear breast pads and pack a clean blouse or blazer in case of milk leakage or spills."

Readjusting to your previous work routine can be challenging enough without factoring in a breastfeeding schedule. Be sure to take the time to prepare your baby, your caregiver, your co-workers, and yourself for this new situation.

Vitamin K helps babies produce blood clots to stop bleeding and keep their bones healthy. And while adults and children receive vitamin K from certain foods, babies are born with little supply of the vitamin, putting them at risk for bleeding.

Pediatricians have recommended the vitamin K shot for decades. Learn more about its importance from Dr. Falusi and reach out to your pediatrician with additional questions.

It's not just older kids who can get a concussion. 🤕 Babies and toddlers can get them too and face extra risks. It can also be harder to spot a concussion in a baby or toddler, as they don't have the ability yet to tell you how they feel. Here are signs to look out for, how you can prevent a concussion, and what to do if your child has one.

"An infant or toddler's head is large compared to their body. This makes them top-heavy. So, they are more likely than an older child to fall headfirst when they lose their balance—as babies and young children often do when they're learning to walk, run and explore.

Plus, their neck muscles are still developing and offer less control of head movement. On top of that, a baby’s skull is softer and thinner than an older child’s. While head-first falls put infants and higher risk of concussion, though, any activity where they can hit their head or body hard enough can cause one."

Children under age 4 have the highest rates of concussion, a type of mild traumatic brain injury. But it can be harder to know when an infant or toddler has a concussion. Here's what to know.

Transitioning from elementary school to middle school can be hard for many kids, especially for children who think and learn differently. New routines, having different classes and teachers, being around new students, and adjusting to adolescence can overwhelming. 😰

Here are 5 ways you can help ease your child's jitters and support them during this transition! 👇

"Lots of middle-schoolers are hard on themselves. And tweens who learn and think differently can be especially hard on themselves. They might start the school year expecting to fail or worrying that other kids will think they’re not smart.

You don’t need to downplay your child’s challenges. But it's important to talk about your child’s strengths and passions, too. Give praise in a way that boosts your child’s confidence. And find ways to help your child stick with it when middle school gets tough."

Is your child nervous about the first day of middle school? Use these tips to help calm first-day jitters for kids starting middle school or heading back.

Bathing your baby is a great bonding experience, but it can also cause anxiety, especially if you feel unsure how to give your baby a bath properly and safely. 🧼

During the first two weeks of your newborn’s life, your baby should get sponge baths until their umbilical cord area heals completely. 🧽 You can then use a baby bathtub. Keep in mind that babies don't need a bath every day and giving them a daily bath can actually dry out their skin, especially as their skin is still sensitive. Check out these answers to commonly asked questions and guidelines to follow for bathing your baby. 👇

"The AAP recommends that the hottest temperature at the faucet should be no more than 120 degrees Fahrenheit to help avoid burns. In many cases you can adjust your water heater setting to not go above this temperature. Tap water that's too hot can quickly cause burns serious enough to require a hospital visit or even surgery. In fact, hot water scalds are the top cause of burns among babies and young children."

The timing of your baby's very first bath has changed over the last few years. Learn more about this, as well as get answers to other parent FAQs on baby bath timing, frequency, and safety.
