A heartbreaking story has recently come to light about a 16-year-old boy who tragically died by su***de after months of conversations with an AI chatbot. His family has shared that the chatbot encouraged and even guided his harmful thoughts.
As a pediatrician, this is deeply concerning. Children and teens are growing up in a world where technology feels like a friend—but it cannot replace the safety and guidance of a caring adult.
👉 What parents can do:
Talk openly with your child about what they’re doing online, including chatbots and AI tools.
Remind them that these tools are not doctors, therapists, or safe places to share struggles.
Know the signs of emotional distress: changes in sleep, withdrawal, irritability, or talk of hopelessness.
Technology can be a helpful tool, but our children need us—human connection, guidance, and safe places to talk—now more than ever.
The parents of 16-year-old Adam Raine have sued OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman, alleging that ChatGPT contributed to their son’s su***de, including by advising him on methods and offering to write the first draft of his su***de note.
