Thank you to Pamela Ferguson and Acupuncture Today for addressing the recent Chicago Med episode and speaking up against harmful misrepresentations of acupuncture.

As NCBAHM CEO Mina Larson noted, it is “disappointing to see such dramatic misrepresentations” that reinforce “outdated myths and misconceptions” about the profession. Accurate public understanding matters, and we remain committed to supporting awareness of the safety, professionalism, and integrity of acupuncture and herbal medicine.

Today we honor the life and legacy of Neal Stuart Miller, LAc (December 10, 1957 – February 2026).

Neal was a licensed acupuncturist since 1982 and a behind-the-scenes powerhouse who devoted more than four decades to protecting and advancing our profession. He believed acupuncture is strongest when we speak with one voice—and he lived that principle through consistent leadership, mentorship, and tireless advocacy.

Neal helped achieve milestones that continue to benefit patients and practitioners:

• California workers’ compensation recognition for licensed acupuncturists—and the successful effort to make that status permanent
• The FDA’s 1996 reclassification of acupuncture needles to Class II (medical device), a pivotal step toward modern access and reimbursement
• Professional unity through the co-founding of the original California State Oriental Medical Association (CSOMA) and later service as President of CalATMA
• Support for integrated medicine through AIMS, including efforts around Tui Na recognition and low-level laser stimulation

Neal practiced at SCO Medical Center (Studio City Oriental Medical Center) in Sherman Oaks, CA, and he brought warmth, authenticity, and a love for The Grateful Dead wherever he went.

Our hearts are with all who loved him. If you have a story, photo, or memory of Neal, please share it below.

The U.S. Department of Education has issued a proposed rule that could significantly impact Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine (AHM) education.

As drafted, the rule does not explicitly include licensure-leading AHM programs as “professional degree programs,” which could lower federal student loan limits and eliminate Grad PLUS access for students. This would create financial barriers, shrink the workforce, and reduce patient access to nonpharmacologic care.

Public comments are critical. DOE must consider them when finalizing the rule.

Submitting a comment takes only a few minutes — and you may choose to display your name publicly or remain anonymous.

Deadline is fast approaching – March 2, 2026!

For more information and to submit your comment, please visit:

Your voice can help protect the future of AHM education and patient access to care.
