Yoga Capitol with Jennifer Mellon

Yoga Capitol with Jennifer Mellon Jennifer Mellon, RYT-200, is a registered yoga teacher who teaches in various studios and privately. She loves sharing the gift of yoga with children.

Yoga found Jennifer twenty years ago and it was love at first sight. Eventually moving to DC, a daily yoga practice helped her deal with the emotional, physical, and spiritual stress of being a Washingtonian. Jennifer believes that yoga helps the whole person and she incorporates that belief into her physically challenging and emotionally centering classes. Her training in the Iyengar tradition helps guide her students of all ages and abilities through physically uplifting classes that focus on healthy alignment, modifications for all levels, and hands-on adjustments. Through individualized attention and hands-on instruction, Jennifer helps her students reach their own joyful potential. As a mother of three little yogis, she has experienced the bonding benefits of practicing with her children.

I’m obviously biased to ā€œLight on Yoga: The Definitive Guide to Yoga Practice, by B.K.S. Iyengar,ā€ but these all are must reads for any yogi hoping to deepen their practice.

Fourteen teachers shared recommendations for students at all levels.

ā€œBecause of this emphasis on connecting the mind and the body, yoga may lead to greater mental health benefits than other forms of exercise. Research suggests that yoga reduces anxiety, elevates mood and reduces stress, perhaps more than aerobic exercise. A 2023 clinical trial also found that yoga reduces symptoms of depression and improves sleep.ā€

It really is as healthy as people say. Here’s how to start a practice.

I highly recommend Yoga Nidra for those who have never tried! There are great classes at local studios here in the Alexandria and DC area. Winter is a wonderful time to incorporate this healing experience into your yoga practice.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, my beloved studios were closed and virtual classes were not always an option. I was apprehensive about Peloton yoga classes, but quickly fell in love with the range of music, variety of teachers and class options. As an Iyengar teacher, I was pleasantly surprised by the focus on proper alignment. What are your thoughts? Have you tried Peloton yoga?

When you think of Peloton, you probably think of intense indoor cycling classes and or maybe even guided runs, but it is fast-becoming a household name for yoga, too, specially with the global relaunch of Peloton yoga. The global relaunch of Peloton yoga means the expansion of Peloton Yoga’s instru...

In a time of isolation and racial unrest, people in the Black community are tapping into a yoga to get a sense of reprieve. Within the past year, teachers say they have seen an increasing number of Black men and women either practicing yoga or working to become instructors.

It would never be worth hauling yourself to the studio for a 11 minute class—but it’s just the thing between Zooms.

'Yoga practice could be linked to increased gray matter volume in the hippocampus, a key structure for memory; increased volume in certain regions of the prefrontal cortex, the seat of higher-order cognition; and greater connectivity across the default mode network. This network plays a role in processing memories and emotions and 'what we call self-referential processing—processing information about yourself,' explains Jessica Damoiseaux, a cognitive neuroscientist at Wayne State University and co-author of the review paper."

Brain-scan studies hint that the ancient practice may benefit areas associated with memory, emotion and thinking
