Honored to be a speaker at the 16th Annual Battered Mothers Custody Conference from 4/19/2024-4/21/2024 in Albany, NY. The conference is a grass roots, all volunteer conference to provide education, support and networking opportunities for mothers seeking legal protection for themselves and their children within the family court system. I will present a workshop for mothers and their supporters on identifying the reverberating effects of trauma on individuals. We will identify strategies to reclaim the parts of themselves they they had to disconnect from while they were making adaptations to survive abuse and protect their children. "It is not what is wrong with you. It is what happened to you and what did you have to do to cope and survive."

So very excited to start teaching a course on Trauma's Lifetime Effects for Encore Learning beginning Thursday, November 10, 2022 at 12 noon-1:30 pm for 4 weeks. The course is virtual, open to adult learners age 50 and above and people can register at Encore Learning The course will support people to understand why they “do what they do,” even though part of them knows what they are doing does not always make sense or is not in their best interest. They wonder, “What is wrong with me?”, rather than, "What happened to me?" In this class, we will explore how trauma, especially childhood trauma and its impact on the developing brains of children, influences us as adults. Sometimes people feel as if they are living their lives on auto-pilot and they want to know how to change course and direction. We will discuss the basic concepts of the neurobiology of trauma, the adaptations our brains make to survive trauma and the reverberating effects of trauma on our mental health, physical health and our relationships. We will also discuss ways to change so we can move forward in our lives with increased understanding and compassion for ourselves. Still room to sign up!! Delighted to have you join us for this learning experience.

Sincere thanks to Dr. Sylvia Marotta-Walters for inviting me to speak to graduate students at The George Washington University Graduate School of Education and Human Development on the importance of treating substance use disorders from a trauma-informed perspective. So important to recognize that substance use disorders arise from the individual's desperate attempt to regulate a profoundly dysregulated nervous system to manage the pain and reverberating effects of trauma. I wish the students all the best as they move forward in their counseling careers.
