Back-to-school season means it’s time to reset sleep schedules. Occupational Therapist Sydney Bordelon recommends gradually adjusting bedtime and wake-up times by 10 to 15 minutes every few days. She advises starting with a calming bedtime routine one to two hours before sleep, including a warm bath, brushing teeth, and reading. Screen time, heavy meals, and caffeine should be avoided before bed to help the brain wind down. A cool, quiet, dark sleep environment and a consistent daily schedule, including weekends, support healthy sleep habits. As for recommended sleep hours, she says the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends 10 to 13 hours for preschoolers, 9 to 12 hours for school-aged children, and 8 to 10 hours for teenagers.

With kids back in school, it's time to remember backpack safety. According to Occupational Therapist Kaysie Busby, backpacks that don’t fit right or weigh too much can lead to serious injuries. She recommends choosing a pack that sits at or just above the waist, fits close to the body, and has padded straps. Kids should wear both straps and avoid carrying more than 10 to 20 percent of their body weight. For heavier loads, rolling backpacks or chest and hip straps can help spread the weight and reduce strain.

When it comes to scoliosis prevention, Physical Therapy Assistant Donna Redmon encourages parents to talk to their kids about posture so they can start making conscious efforts to improve it. She recommends limiting screen time and bending over at a desk to 30-minute intervals to reduce strain. Simple activities like walking, biking, jumping jacks, or wall push-ups can help keep kids from being sedentary. If a child complains of neck or back pain, she recommends seeing a doctor since kyphosis is becoming more common due to constant device use.

When deciding whether to take your child to the pediatrician or the ER, age plays a major role, says R.N. and Clinical Educator Garrison Nichols. According to Garrison, infants under six months with a fever of 102 or higher should be taken to the ER immediately. For children six months and older, a pediatrician is more appropriate for low-grade fevers, mild rashes, pink eye, runny noses, and other minor injuries or symptoms. Garrison adds that signs of mental changes like unusual drowsiness, not eating, or not using the bathroom may signal something more serious. In those cases, an ER visit is the safer choice.

Keeping young kids healthy this back-to-school season starts with their nutrition and what they’re eating. RN and Diabetes Care and Education Specialist Marie Simpson stresses the importance of teaching kids what’s healthy at a young age and how to navigate nutritional needs as they grow up. Incorporating a protein into each snack or meal can help kids maintain concentration throughout a long day of school. She says that apples are great because of their vitamins and nutrients, but including some string cheese, nuts, or a slice of ham or turkey is a simple way to elevate snack time. Prioritize nutrition this school year for a boost in mood, energy, and focus, setting the kids up for success!

The start of a new school year brings fresh chances to help kids learn how to stay healthy. School-based Physician Assistant Michelle Harris helps teach kids ages 4 to 18 everything from hand hygiene to managing chronic conditions like asthma. She works with students to help them recognize symptoms early, understand what those symptoms mean, and learn what to do when something doesn’t feel right. Over time, she sees kids grow into teens who know how to take action and make informed decisions about their health. Michelle says it’s all about giving kids the tools to take control and build confidence that lasts through high school and beyond.
