It's been 3 years since I carried these into the studio and I'm excited to lead a Foam Rolling Workshop on April 1, 1:30-3pm at Radiance Yoga again.

Our posture while driving, working on the computer and texting can wreak havoc on our shoulders, neck and upper back. These areas are also a favorite spot for emotional tension to reside. I'll will guide you through a series of traditional yoga postures, targeted stretches and unique foam rolling skills to help you find the release that your upper body has been craving.
Foam rollers will be provided.
Price: $35

I'm finally getting to this book that's been on my list for a while. I think it's a must read for teen girls and women.

We are all on different journeys here and on different timetables when it comes to this kind of liberation work. But I imagine a lot of you will find it a helpful tool, wherever you are.

More Than A Body: Your Body Is an Instrument, Not an Ornament

Happy to be heading back to the front of a classroom at Radiance Yoga on Saturday at noon. I've missed it and y'all. If you are game for some gentle yoga and it fits in your schedule, see you there or on the livestream.

Thank you for the continued emails and texts of encouragement. It seems like a good time for an update but first let me wish you all well. I hope you've had a good spring and summer and your practice is serving you well.

As I mentioned in my last update I had to take sometime off to explore treatments for arthritis in my spine and explore new ways of moving. I'm happy to say the treatments were a success and it feels so much better. But the body is funny. As soon as that was settled my hip decided it was time for some long overdue attention. Long story short- I am 4 weeks out from a hip replacement. Many of you might know I had the other hip replaced about 9 years ago (again, arthritis) and this time feels like a faster recovery. I credit Dr. Shershon at Anderson Orthopedic and going into it with a general sense of trust in my body being able to heal.

Which it is. I got on the mat this week in Christy's gentle class at Radiance and couldn't have felt more grateful for her, that space, and my practice. I'll be working to gain strength and stamina the next few months so I can, hopefully, get back to teaching.

Thank you all again for your warm wishes. Victory to our spirits!

Hi folks. First let me thank you for the messages of encouragement as I have taken a "sabbatical" from teaching yoga. I've missed the Radiance Yoga community-
the talented teachers, gracious management, and warm and funny students.

For those who didn't know, I've stepped back to take care of some pain caused by arthritis in my spine and spinal stenosis. I realized I needed the time to do some self care, explore treatments, and to learn how to do yoga with the body I now have. One bit of humor- when my doctor gave me my diagnosis he suggested I try some yoga. lol

In the past, I've always become a better teacher when I am met with an injury. I would expect this might present me with the same gift. Don't get me wrong- those closest to me have heard plenty of belly-aching. But I'm also trying to find the benefits of the obstacles put in my path.

I've also taken a bit of break from social media- again to free up time. I'll probably continue to only check my social media messages periodically.

I wish I had a magic date for you of when I'll be back in the studio but I don't. I imagine it will be first as a student, then a teacher. Please take advantage of the opportunity to learn from others. New teachers always teach us new things.

In the meantime, please take good care of yourselves and each other.

Emily

Wolf Terry writes that her decision to get the COVID-19 vaccine was her way of showing love for the people in my community.

07/28/2021

In a pre-emptive response to the COVID-19 Delta variant, we are initiating a new studio policy. We will now require all those who wish to attend in-studio classes to be fully vaccinated, effective August 2, 2021.

Please email a copy of your vaccination card to info@radiance-yoga.net to save time in the studio, or you may present your vaccination card (or photo on a mobile device) at the desk. You only need to present your proof of vaccination once and a note will be added to your profile.

Please know that we are implementing this policy with great care; we are deeply committed to the health and well-being of all of our students, teachers, and staff.

All in-person classes will continue to be offered at reduced capacity. We recognize that not everyone who wants to practice yoga has been fully vaccinated, so we will continue our LiveStream and Outdoor classes for those not quite ready for in-person.

We are so grateful to our amazing community for your understanding and support as we continue to navigate this ongoing crisis.

I'm calling on all aunties, mothers, coaches, educators and other women who mentor girls. I'm calling on all of you who look in the mirror with a lack of love for yourself. I'm calling on you who are tired of the all the diet culture messages but can't seem to get beyond them in your head.

Please take a step toward body liberation and self acceptance. For yourself, for the ones you love.

I'll be facilitating my first Embody Love Movement workshop since before the pandemic and I am looking forward to sharing this important work again on JULY 25th. And I'm REALLY looking forward to having Alli Rae Transformations help in co-creating this workshop with you. We will be offering it online but space is still limited. You can register at
www.emilystraight.com/workshops under Radical Self Acceptance. Please help spread the word.

Sliding scale pricing is offered.

It's a big week. Radiance is adding 20 in person yoga classes!!! I'm so grateful for Masuda Mohamadi's leadership and the management team so we could land at the end of the pandemic with the doors open! Thank you to all of you who have been live streaming and doing on-demand classes to help us get to this point. We've got quite the village.

My Wednesday 9am flow and Thursday 10:30 am Gentle will now be in person & live streamed. You have the option to take the class in studio or online. Space is still limited for the in-person classes so it's important to sign up in advance for either option.

We made it!

Our Story

Emily specializes in flow, gentle, teen and corporate yoga classes and has over 13 years of teaching experience. You can find her drop in classes at Radiance Yoga in Old Town Alexandria, VA. She is also a certified Embody Love Movement facilitator and leads body-positive and empowering workshops for girls and women.

"It was one of the most powerful and empowering afternoons I've ever had, and it has permanently altered my perception of myself and other women in the best way. By having difficult conversations about female expectations, we were able to confront those standards head-on, leaving with a better understanding that society's expectations for us is not how we should be defined. “ Sophie, High School Senior

"Emily has a gift. I truly love her style and I always end up knowing myself a little better than I did going in." Anonymous reviewer/ Annapolis, MD

"Emily is a competent, reliable and inspirational yoga teacher who adapts well to the corporate environment. She can easily work with all levels, assess individual pain points and areas of focus, and rolls with the punches when things pop when taking a studio class into the office. Her lessons translate well off the mat, and we often find ourselves discussing her messaging around the break. I highly recommend Emily for your office yoga needs."
