Ever tried cupping?
Did you know there are several styles of cupping depending on the treatment goals?
🐙 Stationary cupping results in those circular bruises we've all seen on Michael Phelps. It is used to move stasis, clear pathogenic cold, and stop pain in muscle tissue
🤲 Sliding cupping is used to release stasis but is gentler on the body's resources so it is used when someone is fatigued and hurting. We also use it to clear pathogenic wind and heat.
🫧 Popping cupping is used to wake up a muscle group when it is not firing well. I use this often for folks with musculoskeletal pains, especially on either side of the spine. I may do stationary cupping on one side of the spine and popping cupping on the other, for example, when muscular imbalances are contributing to spinal misalignment. (And I often refer these patients to .chiro for adjustments, too!)

✨ 🩸Blood building salad!🩸✨
In Chinese medicine, blood serves many important roles that go beyond "the wet red stuff" and include more energetic phenomena. Blood deficiency signs depend on the affected channel system and could include:

👀 Insomnia (especially difficulty falling asleep)
💪 Muscle cramps and being prone to overuse injury
😨 Anxiety
🏜️ Dry skin and nails
📜 Sallow complexion
😕 Trouble concentrating
🥶 Cold, pale extremities
🩸 Light or absent periods
😵‍💫 Lightheadedness

This meal has tons of lovely blood-building foods!
Dark leafy greens, red beets, red beans, red fruit, seeds, nuts, eggs...
Eating foods like this plus getting plenty of fluids can help!

These symptoms plus marked fatigue could indicate early signs of what allopathic medicine would diagnose anemia. Regular annual blood work and wellness checks are important and acupuncture and diet are not a substitute for but rather a supplement to regular medical care.

Funny things I get up to... I took my silicone ear to an acupuncture demo at my kid's school cause her class is studying Asia this month. So now I've had to give the ear a bath 😅
I've had this little guy for 9 years, since I started learning to needle. And I think this might be his first bath? Idk he just didn't pick up lint before.

sinus pressure edition.
I've been struggling to get over a cold my kiddo gifted to me, so I'm treating the sinus pressure today with Bi Tong (nose opening) and Shangxing (upper star), two acupuncture points that are very supportive for folks with sinus pressure and pain. Cupping! One of my favorite ways to support folks with muscle pains, especially in the upper back and shoulders. Small cups like this are useful in curved areas because they maintain suction better.
Cups use a vacuum (which can be generated with a hand pump, as in this set, or with fire) to lift tissue up away from the body, helping create more space between layers of fascia and muscle. The bruising that occurs is actually diagnostic for your provider - dark bruises indicate stagnation, pale bruises indicate deficiency, and so on - and is a normal and expected outcome during cupping.
Facial cupping uses much a weaker vacuum and can be done without any bruising.
Cups can be left in place, creating the distinctive circular bruising, or they can be slid along the skin with the aid of a massage creme or oil. Most of my clients love sliding cupping! They say it's relaxing and feels great.
