American Council of the Blind Strives to increase the independence, security, equality of opportunity, and quality of life for all people who are blind or have low vision.

The American Council of the Blind is a national membership organization formed by people who are blind to promote the independence, dignity and advancement of people with blindness and visual impairment. Members are blind, visually impaired or fully sighted people, from all walks of life, and ranging in age from teens to seniors. ACB encourages people with vision impairment to live and work independently, to make significant contributions within their communities, and to advocate for themselves. ACB governmental affairs staff constantly monitors laws and regulations crucial to the lives of people who are blind. Issues which receive ACB’s attention include civil rights, education, employment, Social Security benefits, rehabilitation services, guide dog access, pedestrian safety, travel and recreation, expanded public transportation, adaptive technology, braille literacy and more. When appropriate, ACB works in coalition with other disability groups worldwide to create a range of effective programs for people who are visually impaired.

There’s still time to apply for ACB scholarships for the 2026-2027 school year! Applications are open through February 14, 2026.

Since 1982, ACB’s Scholarship Program has helped students who are legally blind pursue their educational and career goals. In partnership with generous individuals and organizations, including the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB), ACB offers scholarships ranging from $2,000 to $7,500 for incoming freshmen, undergraduate and graduate students, and those attending technical colleges.

These scholarships help cover post-secondary education financial needs, including tuition, fees, room and board, and other additional costs associated with assistive technology.

This week Meta announced the launch of AI Glasses Impact Grants for U.S.-based organizations using Meta AI glasses to drive positive societal and economic value.

Meta will award 25 Accelerator Grants to organizations that use Meta AI glasses to scale their impact, and five Catalyst Grants to organizations proposing new, innovative applications using the Meta Wearables Device Access Toolkit.

Reminder that registration is OPEN for the ACB’s 2026 D.C. Leadership Conference, with in-person activities taking place March 6-10 at the Sheraton Pentagon City Hotel in Arlington, Virginia.

Register through the ACB members site here: https://members.acb.org. Registration closes on February 28, 2026 at 11:59 PM CT.

It’s National Hug Your Puppy Day! Every day, guide dogs like Balsa and Marty help their handlers navigate the world with greater independence, confidence, and freedom. They are trusted partners, skilled professionals, and loyal companions, all rolled into one.

Today is a great reminder to appreciate the incredible role guide dogs play in the lives of people who are blind or have low vision. Let’s give all our furry companions a well-earned hug!

On this week’s episode of the ACB Advocacy Update, ACB Executive Director Scott Thornhill speaks about the Randolph-Sheppard Act, which celebrates its 90th anniversary this year.

Scott speaks with members of ACB’s affiliate, Randolph-Sheppard Act Vendors of America (RSVA), and board member Jeff Thom about the history of this important legislation in creating entrepreneurial opportunities for people who are blind. Over the last few months, changes in policy will mean that action is needed.
