HOW TO TALK TO YOUR PARTNER ABOUT HEARING LOSS

Living with someone who can’t hear can be frustrating, especially when they are unaware of the problem. If they constantly ask you to repeat yourself, turn up the volume on the television to an uncomfortable level, or have trouble hearing the telephone, microwave or doorbell chime, it might be time to have a heart-to-heart chat. Pick a quiet time when the two of you are in a good mood and you can talk uninterrupted. Use a firm, caring tone that is not judgmental or condescending.

Tell them it's affecting your relationship. While your communication partner may be concerned about the stigma of wearing hearing aids, someone saying "what?" all the time can be a relationship buzzkill. Hearing loss affects communication, which is the core of all relationships.

Tell them you’re concerned for their health. When hearing loss is left untreated, the speech and language areas of the brain can atrophy, leading to auditory deprivation and putting a person at increased risk of cognitive, or memory decline.

Tell them you’re concerned for your own health. The additional stress of worrying about your other half's health and safety can take a physical and emotional toll on your own health. Plus, it's no fun to listen to the TV or stereo when it's cranked up too high, or having to shout or constantly repeat yourself.

Make an appointment to have your own hearing tested and ask them to go with you. First of all, it’s something you should do anyway. Secondly, it’s always good to have another set of ears to hear what the hearing care provider has to say, no matter who the patient is. Who knows? The hearing evaluation process is so simple and easy, they might just agree to have their own test.

Discuss hearing loss's broad impact. They may not be aware of all the ways that their hearing loss is lowering their quality of life. Discuss the signs of hearing loss with them, including signs like fatigue and feeling frustrated a lot.

I know we talk about reviews a lot and ask for YOUR review, but reviews are very important to a business.

“Why” are they so important? Notice this comment from Rocket Digital;

The power of the customer testimonial cannot be underestimated in its influence on other potential customers. You can tell me you are nice, and I may believe you. However, if an unbiased third party tells me you are nice, I’d be much more inclined to believe it. In fact, one recent study suggests that customer reviews are the most powerful purchase influence. Another study found that 88% of consumers consult reviews before making a purchase, and yet another study indicated that 63% of consumers are more likely to make a purchase from a site that has customer reviews.

Even though we live here in Louisiana, and spring seems to be popping up everywhere, we are not out of the woods yet (or done with winter). Remember, just a couple years ago we had an ice storm during this week! Or, you may decide to get in some spring time skiing before the snow up north melts!

Caring for hearing aids in colder weather
In places where it gets cold, it can be tough on a lot of things: automobiles, fingers and toes, and our psyche. But it doesn’t need to be hard on hearing aids, so long as you keep in mind a few things to do — and not do — when wearing hearing aids in cold weather.

Five do’s
*Be careful when removing hats and scarves to avoid pulling off and losing your hearing aids. This goes for masks too!
*Keep spare batteries on hand (or a charger with you for rechargeable devices) as winter cold can drain batteries faster than normal.
*Consider removing your hearing aids when participating in winter activities like skiing or snowmobiling to avoid losing your hearing aids or exposing them to excess moisture.
*When coming in from the cold, let your hearing aids rest awhile by removing them, and opening the battery door to let moisture/condensation escape. (Rechargeable hearing aids can simply be wiped with a dry cloth after removal.)
*Use a hearing aid dehumidifier to help extend the life of your hearing aids.

Five don’ts
*Don’t worry that cold weather will necessarily harm your hearing aids — they’re made of tough stuff!
*Don’t store batteries or chargers in the car.
*Don’t store your rechargeable hearing aids in a heated drying system.
*Don’t forget to keep up with the daily cleaning regimen of your hearing aids.
*Don’t hesitate to call your hearing professional if you notice distortion, sound cutting in and out, or static from your hearing aids.

Communication Tips
When you have a friend or a family member who has hearing loss, communication can be difficult for both the person with the hearing loss and the person who does not. Even with the usage of hearing devices, there will still be a communication block.

Here are some tips on how to effectively communicate with someone who has a mild to moderate hearing loss:

Face the hearing-impaired person directly, on the same level and in good light whenever possible. Position yourself so that the light is shining on the speaker's face, not in the eyes of the listener
Do not talk from another room. Not being able to see each other when talking is a common reason people have difficulty understanding what is said
Speak clearly, slowly, distinctly, but naturally, without shouting or exaggerating mouth movements. Shouting distorts the sound of speech and may make speech reading more difficult
Avoid talking too fast or using sentences that are too complex. Slow down, pause between sentences, and wait to make sure you have been understood before moving on
A hearing-impaired person has difficulty understanding words or parts of words. Your voice may be audible but separate words may sound blurred. Words that sound similar such as: cat/cap, bread/thread, pool/cool are extremely difficult to distinguish. When your family member does not understand you the first time, repeating the same words may be unhelpful. Consider rephrasing the sentence using different words which may be understood
Hearing loss can make it difficult for your family member to judge the volume of his/her own voice because they aren't able to hear themselves. Let your family member know when their voice may be too loud or too soft
Do not cover your face with your hands or other objects. Individuals with hearing loss rely on visual cues to help follow the conversation and sometimes find lip reading helpful. Avoid eating and drinking while conversing

New Study Shows the Benefits of Hearing Birds
If you have untreated hearing loss, you might be missing a lot of sounds in your everyday life. You might have difficulty understanding speech, making conversations with your family and friends challenging. You might not be able to hear your favorite music, movies, or TV shows without turning the volume up much higher than you used to. You might not be able to hear the sounds of nature, like the water rushing past in a river or birds singing in the trees. If you are unable to hear the birds, you might be missing out on more than the sweet sound of bird chirps and whistles. New research shows that seeing and hearing birds is good for your mental health—and if you cannot hear birds, you are missing out on those benefits.

The research, which was published in 2022, found that seeing or hearing birds is associated with an improvement in mental wellbeing. The study was conducted by researchers at King’s College London between April 2018 and October 2021 with 1,292 participants. These participants completed a total of 26,856 assessments with the Urban Mind app, which was developed by King’s College London, landscape architects J&L Gibbons, and arts foundation Nomad Projects. While participants were recruited worldwide, the majority were based in the United States of America, the United Kingdom, and the European Union.

In the study, participants used the app to answer questions three times a day about whether they could see or hear birds. They were then asked questions about their mental wellbeing, which allowed researchers to establish an association between the two. Researchers were also able to estimate how long this association lasted.

The results show that seeing or hearing birds is associated with improvements in mental wellbeing in both healthy people and those with depression. Researchers estimate that the positive effects of seeing or hearing birds can last for up to eight hours.

Listening to the sounds of nature has long been hypothesized to benefit mental wellbeing. Many people enjoy listening to nature sounds, including the sounds of birds, to help them relax and relieve stress. However, this is the first study to provide scientific evidence of the connection between seeing or hearing birds and mental wellbeing.

This study shows that going outside and seeing or hearing birds is a simple way to improve your mental wellbeing—with the benefits lasting for up to eight hours! Going outside to watch or listen to birds just once a day could potentially bring noticeable mental health benefits. If you are unable to hear the birds when you are outside, you could be missing out on significant mental wellbeing benefits (not to mention beautiful birdsongs!). With treatment, such as wearing hearing aids, you can once again enjoy the sound of birds, along with many other sounds you may be missing out on if you have untreated hearing loss.

If you notice you are not hearing the sounds of nature as you should, give us a call! 318-442-9812. The birds are still there!

HAPPY SUPER SUNDAY! Some people are excited for the super bowl. Others just because it is Sunday! Let's continue talking about ear infections and hearing loss.

Chronic Ear Infections
Most people experience an ear infection at least once in their lifetime. For others, the problem becomes chronic, so they have infections over and over. Chronic ear infections can lead to complications that mean a more significant and possibly permanent hearing loss, especially if the problem is left untreated.

Conductive Hearing Loss From Ear Infections
Ear infections can cause conductive hearing loss. In other words, sound waves can’t get to the inner ear at the proper strength. The ear has mechanisms along the canal the amplify the sound wave, so by the time it reaches the tiny hair cells of the inner ear, it is strong enough to cause a vibration. With a conductive hearing loss, something changes along that route and the sound isn’t amplified as much.

Bacteria don’t just sit and behave in the ear when you have an ear infection. They need to eat to survive, so they break down those mechanisms that amplify sound waves. Usually, this kind of damage involves the eardrum and the tiny little bones. The bones are very delicate and it doesn’t take much to break them up. Once they are gone, they stay gone. That’s permanent damage and your hearing won’t return. In some cases, surgeons can install prosthetic bones to restore hearing. The eardrum can repair itself but might have scar tissue affecting its ability to move. Surgery can fix that, as well.

What Can You Do to Prevent This Permanent Hearing Loss?
First and foremost, see a doctor if you think you have an ear infection. The sooner you get treatment, the better. Second, don’t ignore chronic ear infections. The more serious infections you have, the more damage they cause. Finally, take steps to prevent colds, allergies and sinus infections because that is where ear infections usually start. If you are a smoker, now is the time to stop, too, because smoking increases your risk of having chronic respiratory problems.

If you’ve had an ear infection and still are having problems hearing, see your doctor. It is possible you have some damage, but that is not the only thing that causes conductive hearing loss. If it turns out it is permanent, hearing aids will help you hear once again.
