Today during National EMS Week, we want to take a moment to recognize the dedicated EMS professionals and volunteers who answer the call day and night to serve our communities.

From the crews at Kossuth County EMS to our county agencies, Burt First Responders, Bancroft EMS, Fenton EMS, Lakota EMS, Lone Rock First Responders, Titonka EMS, Wesley First Responders, and Whittemore EMS, as well as all of our other neighboring agencies, thank you for your commitment, sacrifice, and compassion.

Strong rural communities are built on people like you who are always willing to step up and answer the call when others need help most.

Thank you for all you do, today and every day. Happy EMS Week! 🚑

A little throwback today to some of Algona and Swea City’s first ambulances compared to today’s!

Now it’s Swea City’s turn!

Some of Swea City’s earliest ambulances looked much different than what we see responding today. The community’s first ambulance was actually a hearse owned by the local funeral home before later transitioning to an old carpentry van that was retrofitted into an ambulance. Pictured alongside them is our second newest ambulance, 55-121, showing just how far EMS has come over the years.

While the vehicles and equipment may have changed, the dedication to helping neighbors in times of need has remained the same. During EMS Week, we’re proud to recognize the history of EMS and the people who helped build these services for our communities.

A little throwback today to some of Algona and Swea City’s first ambulances compared to today’s!

First up Algona!

This unit was originally a public works van that was converted into one of the first ambulances in the 1970s! Compared to is it is our newest ambulance in the fleet, 55-122. As you can see, technology and equipment has changed quite a bit over the years!

As we celebrate EMS Week, we’re proud to honor the history of EMS in our communities while continuing to move forward in providing the best care possible for Kossuth County.

A stroke is a dire medical emergency and recognizing the signs quickly can change a life. 🧠🚑

The American Heart Association recommends remembering the acronym B.E.F.A.S.T.:

B – Balance: Sudden loss of balance or coordination
E – Eyes: Sudden vision changes or trouble seeing
F – Face: One side of the face drooping or uneven
A – Arms: Weakness or numbness in one arm
S – Speech: Slurred speech or trouble speaking
T – Time: Time to call 911 immediately

When it comes to stroke, every minute matters. Early treatment can greatly improve recovery and outcomes.

Knowing the warning signs of a heart attack can save a life. ❤️

According to the American Heart Association, common warning signs include:
• Chest discomfort or pressure
• Pain spreading to the arm, back, neck, jaw, or stomach
• Shortness of breath
• Cold sweat, nausea, or lightheadedness

Symptoms can be different for everyone and may come and go. Don’t ignore the signs or wait to see if they improve.

If you think someone may be having a heart attack, call 911 immediately. Fast treatment saves heart muscle and saves lives.

When every second counts, clearly visible house numbers can make all the difference. 🚑

Help first responders find your home faster by making sure your address is easy to see from the road both day and night.

A few simple tips:
• Use large, easy-to-read numbers
• Make sure numbers contrast with the background
• Keep them visible from the street and not blocked by trees or decorations
• Add reflective or illuminated numbers when possible

In an emergency, those extra seconds matter. Taking a few minutes to check your address visibility could help save valuable time when help is on the way.

Severe bleeding can become life-threatening in just minutes, but quick action can save a life. 🩸🚑

The Stop the Bleed campaign recommends three simple steps to help control serious bleeding:

• Apply firm, direct pressure to the wound
• Pack the wound with clean cloth or gauze if needed
• Use a tourniquet for severe bleeding from an arm or leg

Call 911 immediately and continue applying pressure until help arrives. Acting fast can make all the difference.
