The Lake in the Hills Village Hall at 600 Harvest Gate will serve as a cooling center for those who are seeking relief from the extreme heat. If visiting before or after regular business hours, please call the police department's non-emergency phone number at 847-658-5676 and press "1" when prompted to speak to a dispatcher. A police officer be dispatched to unlock the center on an as-needed basis for community members in need during the after-hours time from 5:00 p.m. – 8:30 a.m.

Please note that pets are only allowed if crated. Service animals are welcome.

With the heat index soaring above 100° in McHenry County, it is important to stay safe and be aware of what resources are available in the community.

Here are four tips to help you and your community make it through safely:

1. Keeping Yourself Cool: ensure that you are staying hydrated with plenty of water and taking breaks from the outdoor heat by finding a cooler environment
2. Know Where Community Resources Are: take a moment to search up local cooling centers in your county. These are great places to cool off if your home or business cannot get cool enough
3. Learn the Symptoms of Heat-Related Illness: heat rash, heat exhaustion and heat stroke can all occur with soaring temperatures. Learn the symptoms so that if you see someone showing signs, you intervene earlier before symptoms worsen
4. Check-In with Others: older adults, children and people with disabilities are more vulnerable during extreme heat. Checking in with neighbors and family members can help prevent heat-related illnesses and ensure everyone is looked after.
