WORDS OF AFFIRMATION: “I like to write love notes or express my appreciation on index cards at night—taping them to the mirror (and in his truck) so when he wakes up he finds them when he leaves for work. It makes for a better day!” —Amanda
ACTS OF SERVICE: “My boyfriend bends to help me put my shoes on whenever I take them off when we’re together and it’s time to go. I have never asked for this, but it feels so beautiful that he does it. It brings back wonderful childhood feelings.” —Maryamu
RECEIVING GIFTS: “There is a particular flower vendor in a city near our home. On occasion, when my husband happens to be in the area, he will stop and buy me colored roses. He knows I'd rather have a dozen colored roses that last 3 days than two dozen red roses that last 2 weeks.” —Janice
QUALITY TIME: “My younger sister and I would go on frequent walks in a big field on our property on nice evenings. Then we’d sit in the grass and talk to each other, tease each other, and have fun together like sisters do. It was a really good way to spend quality time together and make good memories.” —Lizzie
PHYSICAL TOUCH: “In a long distance relationship it’s often difficult to provide physical touch. So I tried to be creative with my partner. I purchased and sent him a gift-wrapped weighted blanket to wrap up in to feel like I’m cuddling him. Also, inside the box was a gift card to a massage I had already scheduled. He just needed to show up. We’ve made it a ritual until we get to see each other.” —Toni

WORDS OF AFFIRMATION: “Our wedding anniversary is a July 11th. So, anytime we see 7-11 on a digital clock we remind one another. Even when we are not together, one of us will text the other, ‘7-11’. No matter what’s going at the time, it makes me feel good even for a moment.” —Charles
ACTS OF SERVICE: “I love to sew and embroider. While doing laundry, I noticed some holes in some clothes. I put a patch in my dad’s work pants and darned my sister’s favorite sweater. Both of them were very happy to receive their clothes back unexpectedly repaired and now whenever they wear them, they’ll remember I love them.” —Maggie
RECEIVING GIFTS: “My husband knows I love surprises so when I came home from a girls trip he surprised me with a hotel room for the night so I didn’t have to go back to reality for another day.” —Calliope
QUALITY TIME: “My husband likes to fish. I think it’s boring. So, I take along a book or craft that I can do on the bank while he fishes. Always quick to take a break from what I am doing when he has some action on the line, because that is what demonstrates that I care about what he is doing.” —Becky
PHYSICAL TOUCH: “It can be difficult for my oldest daughter to get up and going in the morning. When she’s having a rough time, I often feel my stress rising and then I’m not the best version of myself either. I’ve found that holding or hugging her for a minute right away after waking her can ease us both into a morning filled with more love, patience, and cooperation. 60 seconds can truly make a difference!” —Rachel

WORDS OF AFFIRMATION: “My boyfriend and I are in a long distance relationship, so we find creative ways to show our love to one another. Sending letters in the mail brightens both of our day, especially since his top love language is Words of Affirmation. He then FaceTimes me while he reads it out loud. I love seeing his face light up every time!” —Daré
ACTS OF SERVICE: “Every year since my daughters were born, I have asked them what theme they want for their birthday parties. I find pleasure every year in throwing them a party of their choice. Some of the parties are cute, some small, some a little larger, always sweet. It brings me so much joy. They are now 12 and 13 years old.” —Sonia
GIFTS: Next time you visit family or friends, bring a small host or hostess gift like a candle or sweet treat. Small gestures can go a long way! The more personal to their interests or tastes, the better.
QUALITY TIME: “My husband owns his own lawn care business and I work from home. This week we did ‘Take your wife to work day.’ We both had our own work to do, but it was a fun and unique way to spend time together. I also got to see some of his favorite places to work.” —Stephanie
PHYSICAL TOUCH: Sometimes physical touch is hard to initiate when you feel cramped or stressed. Today, try to be silly and free and see what flows from it; maybe it will be an extra hug or a silly dance together.

WORDS OF AFFIRMATION: “If you work with someone’s child make an extra effort to tell the parent something positive about them. Most parents love to hear someone brag on something positive their kid did.” —Stephanie
ACTS OF SERVICE: “My husband and I have been married for 41 years this May. Every morning my husband makes me THE BEST coffee. I have asked him if I should learn the magic of his process. His response is, ”Why?” One thing to note is that my husband does not drink coffee, nor has he ever. This speaks volumes to me. It’s the simple things.” —Anne
GIFTS: “Prepare a table of the best candies, snacks, or treats for the people at work. Decorate the table so the presentation sends a message of ’I care about you and I value your worth.’ I refill the table daily so the staff can look forward to a daily treat/dose of love and affirmation from me.” —Merla
QUALITY TIME: “When we’re on vacation, we always make a pillow fort out of things we find in our hotel room. It’s a fun tradition and a way to spend quality time together in a way that brings out our inner child!” —Kate
PHYSICAL TOUCH: “My girlfriend’s love language includes 1) Quality Time and 2) Physical Touch (mine is the same in reverse). Our first routine of seeing each other is to give the biggest hug for as long as possible. It always brings me so much joy and love.” —Isaac

WORDS OF AFFIRMATION: “My boyfriend’s love language is words of affirmation. He recently went away for a week and we were unable to call each other, so I wrote him a love note for every day he would be gone for him to open, each with a favorite memory of us together or a quality I admire about him.” —Maggie
ACTS OF SERVICE: “My wife of just over one week prefers to wash clothes with quality soap and fabric conditioner that is the (he) type for all machines. I make sure to get a large bottle of both so she can enjoy washing knowing that she is caring for the washing machine. I often help her to cook and bathe the dog. I enjoy helping her because she shows appreciation for it in return.” —Collis
GIFTS: If you own an online business, try adding a little extra something to your shipments that represents something fun or meaningful about you or your organization. Maybe it’s a water bottle, a refrigerator magnet or sticker with your favorite quote, or gumballs the same color as your business. Whatever you do, get creative and have fun!
QUALITY TIME: “We read relationship books out-loud together, a chapter at a time, nearly every day. We’ve read The 5 Love Languages of course, but other great reads include Hold Me Tight, Love and Respect, The Four Seasons of Marriage, and Attachments and Boundaries. Reading these books together has brought us the intimacy we both craved but had lost sight of in our marriage. Great ’couples’ therapy!” —Pam
PHYSICAL TOUCH: “My #1 Love Language is Physical Touch. When our morning alarms go off at the same time, I found that I could rub my wife’s back to help wake her up for the day. This also helps fulfill my own Love Language of Physical Touch. Plus, she gets a well needed back rub at the same time. Its a win-win.” —David

WORDS OF AFFIRMATION: “My mother used to write words of affirmation to us kids on our banana peels for us to read when we ate our lunches. We were the envy of all the other kids! Now I write love notes on bananas to my husband to find in his lunch box from time to time!” —Ahava
ACTS OF SERVICE: “My mom’s language is acts of service. While she was on vacation, I called the city and had her broken trash and recycling bins replaced. Taking care of this task was a nice surprise that made her life easier and made her feel loved.” —Maggie
GIFTS: “My boyfriend loves crossword puzzles and mentioned how much he enjoyed doing the ones published in our college newspaper (even though he graduated last year). Every Thursday when the paper comes out, I cut out the crossword and write him a note with jokes/puns/encouragement, then either give the note to him or leave it somewhere for him to find at the end of the day — it’s the highlight of my week!” —Liz
QUALITY TIME: “Me and my boyfriend are in a long distance relationship and so we try to keep things exciting! We have both been taking turns to plan a surprise date when we visit one another. Sometimes they consist of picnics or what we call day-dates where we explore shops downtown and try local restaurants. This takes the load off of just one person planning all the dates and it’s fun surprising the other!” —Daré
PHYSICAL TOUCH: “My son (age 7) really doesn’t like to have his nails trimmed. We have made it a much more pleasant experience by incorporating a foot rub—lotion and all—at the end of the nail trimming session. He lies back with his hands behind his head and breathes a sigh of relaxation and I get to show him some love in a way he loves the most.” —Vin
