Congrats to for coming off such a bad injury and absolutely crushing it at sectionals to qualify for state!

The injury she had is not unheard of, but the work she put into fixing it as quickly and efficiently as she did was impressive to watch and fun to be a part of.

Keep it up and good luck at state!

Volleyball player here showing off the shoulder instability they acquired from landing on their outstretched arm trying to save a ball. Look closely and you can see the “clunk” of their shoulder as it slips around in the joint and re-locates.

This symptom is only present with their arm in that overhead, hitting/blocking position. Their clinical exam was mostly negative and they do not have pain with this - although it is effecting their performance.

This is a good example of how an injury, instability, or poor movement pattern can be present without any pain at all.

Hopefully we will have another post soon with much smoother, more stable shoulder motion 🤞

This patient is a baseball player *2 weeks* after suffering a Morel-Lavallee Lesion (MLL) to his quadriceps when sliding into home plate! (Let’s pretend he was also safe...😂)

Presented with huge ROM loss, pain with weight bearing, (swelling and bruising pictured), massive quad shut down and atrophy. Physical exam was negative for any ligament injury, luckily. Referred him to a great area surgeon who was able to diagnose and confirm this as an “MLL”, which was an amazing catch.

This a relatively rare injury, and luckily for him it is healing rather well without the need for surgical intervention. If you’re not familiar with this type of injury, the description is below 👇

Morel-Lavallee Lesions are a closed traumatic soft tissue “degloving” injury (ouch) characterized by separation of the dermis from the underlying fascia due to a shearing force.
Diagnosis requires high a index of suspicion with presence of an area of ecchymosis, swelling, fluctuance and skin hypermobility in the polytrauma patient.

Teaching this young dude how to squat with a safety bar after dislocating his patella (knee cap) about 8 weeks ago playing soccer. He couldn’t lift his leg off the table when I met him and now he’s under the bar asking what more he can do.

Soccer player and a mountain biker - never too early or too late to learn the basics. Tons of fun working with this guy.

This is not very easy..

College sprinter with a nearly recovered distal hamstring injury.

Max effort single leg jump *with a butt-kick.

Exploding into triple extension (hip, knee, ankle) with a midair butt-kick into triple flexion, before sticking the landing 😬. You should hear the heel hitting the glutes.

Notice no hip drop on the unweighted side. Very impressive and almost ready to go full speed.

*Quad Control*
This is a basketball player with a knee contusion (bruise) about 2 weeks out - no tears of any ligaments, cartilage, or tendons.

Nearly every time you “sprain or strain” something that causes even a little swelling in your knee it will likely shut down your quads even after the pain has gone away.

This guy had no idea his quad had gotten so weak after taking some time off, and was very glad his doctor caught it and sent him to PT for an easy fix.

Not correcting this imbalance would place him at huge risk for a more serious injury like an tear if he had just gone right back to playing after just “resting” his knee.

We tested his quad strength with a dynamometer and this guy was shut down by about 50%😬
