Recently I was asked about the different types of massage and what they do. It made me realize that many people don't k ow the differences and what to expect from each type. So, I've decided to give a light breakdown so that when you do book a massage you're coming in w some knowledge of what to expect. Here it goes.
Massage type; what it is; how to dress.
Swedish (classic); long fluid strokes, kneading, chopping of muscular tissue to promote blood flow, promote healing, decrease soreness and release toxins, med to light pressure ; Usually done n**e (w draping/covering) or w underwear on (though bras can get in the way). No jewelry.
Deep tissue: focused massage for adhesions (knots) in the muscle. Can be paired w most massage but I've found that Swedish goes really well w it. Med to heavier pressure.; clothing depends on massage type but, again, Swedish goes well w it.
Sports massage: quicker strokes meant to promote blood flow, relieve soreness, tonify tissue, and promote muscular healing, med pressure; underwear/shorts and sports bra is fine.
Shiatsu; acupressure along meridians, stretches and joint mobilization, balancing of chi/Xi (life force), meant to rebalance energy in the body to help the body heal and promote overall wellness. Med to light pressure; clothes on.
Thai: joint mobilization, heavy on stretches, energy work, med to heavier pressure (some people complain that it hurts though if done right I find it doesn't), clothes on or off though shorts and bra is good.
Lymphatic drainage: very light massage along the lymphatic system to promote the moving and release of waste and toxins in the body and bloodstream. Light pressure; Clothes off.
Reflexology (hand or foot): acupressure and massage of the hand or feet to promote healing and re-balancing of systems and organs in the body. Med to light pressure ; clothes on.
There are more types of lesser known massage but ill save those for another day. I hope this helped! Have a great one!!!
