Eye exams, in some form, date back to ancient times—the earliest written descriptions of vision testing come from 5th century BC Greece, when philosophers like Hippocrates and Aristotle studied the eye.

Modern eye exams, using charts and lenses, began in the 19th century, especially after the Snellen chart was introduced in 1862, which standardized how visual acuity was measured.

If you’re undergoing chemotherapy, you can get an eye exam—and sometimes it’s even more important than usual! Here’s what you need to know:

Why It Matters 👀
Chemo can affect your eyes: dryness, blurry vision, irritation, or increased risk of infection.

Some chemo drugs (like cytarabine, methotrexate, tamoxifen) have specific side effects on vision.

New or worsening vision symptoms? Always get checked!

Be Smart, Stay Safe 🛡️
Check how you’re feeling: Only schedule if you feel well and aren’t severely immunosuppressed.

Talk to your care team: Ask if it’s safe to go to appointments.

Busy clinics = higher risk: High-traffic waiting rooms mean more germs. Let the clinic know you’re on chemo and immunosuppressed.
