Sometimes, the best celebrations are those that catch us by surprise. Last week, a patient at our Blaine, MN center visited on a day that she didn’t have an appointment to drop off coffee and treats for the staff. She wanted to thank her occupational therapist, Cassie Baus, OTD, OTR/L, and wish her a happy Occupational Therapy Month. Pictured: Cassie with the treats.

Mital Patel started occupational therapy at our Manahawkin, NJ center with wrist pain that limited her ability to type and write at work. She is a scientist, personal life coach and mother of two. Her work requires extensive sitting at her computer. Following a thorough assessment, her therapists Mike Staino, OT, CHT, COMT and Inessa Soden, OT, CHT, COMT assessed her posture by simulating her work environment. Poor shoulder and head positioning were to blame for her wrist pain and other problems. Her treatment is focused on wrist stabilization activities, core strength, correct posture and the utilization of Kinesiotape to secure and guide her wrist. After just three visits, Mital is experiencing less wrist pain!

Haley Ward is a true warrior. During a wrestling recruiting showcase, she tore the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in her elbow when her opponent attempted to throw her. But, Haley won the match anyway. In fact, she won the state finals and became the nation's number one recruit in her weight class. It wasn't until the season was over that Haley underwent surgery for her severe UCL tear.

When Haley first came to occupational therapy, she was discouraged. She had been told that recovery would take a year, which would keep her away from wrestling. However, Cheryl Zwerenz, OTR/L, CHT, COMT-UE, both encouraged and challenged her, providing the guidance Haley needed to recover faster than anyone anticipated - mere months.

The day that Haley won her third state championship was actually earlier than she had been told she would be able to return to wrestling in any capacity. Thanks to the power of occupational therapy, as well as Cheryl's skill and encouragement, Haley reports her elbow is 100% back to what it was prior to the injury.

Please join us in congratulating Haley for her speedy recovery and other amazing accomplishments!

When his occupational therapy team helped him get back to full health, he had a new appreciation for mountain biking and occupational therapy!

Distracted Driving

According to the CDC, about eight people are killed every day in crashes that involved a distracted driver. Cellphones aren’t the only distraction out there. There are three different types of distracted driving.

Manual distractions cause you to remove your hands from the wheel. Eating, texting and adjusting the radio are all great examples.

Visual distractions, like looking at billboards or for things in your purse, are ones that make you take your eyes off the road.

A cognitive distraction is anything that causes the mind to wander away from the task of driving, such as thinking about what you're going to have for dinner or focusing on a work task.

Do yourself and everyone around you a favor: Keep your eyes and mind on the road!

Distracted Driving Awareness Month | Cell Phone Safety

Time to put down your phone and pay attention; April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, cell phones are a dangerous distraction. In 2019, distracted driving caused more than 3,000 deaths. While this doesn’t mean that cellphones are solely responsible, they do play a large role in distracting drivers.

Texting or reading a text message takes your eyes off the road for five seconds. If you're driving at 55 mph, that's long enough to cover a football field.

Don't use your phone while driving. Pull over to send messages, use 'Driving Mode' on your phone to silence messages or make sure your phone is out of reach to avoid temptation.
Stay safe and keep your eyes on the road!
