Remember when we were taught in science class how ice takes up more volume than liquid water? This less density/more volume combination is like freezing a full water bottle in a freezer, then taking it out and opening it up, only to have the ice try to jump through the opening in the now-open bottle. A similar process is exactly how frost quakes occur. These won't knock down your house, but sudden booms, or seconds of sustained rumbling can occur whenever a frost quake happens nearby. Depending on how shallow the water table or excess groundwater is in your location, these quakes can often be quite startling. Keep this in mind, especially later tonight when temperatures drop to near 0°F again. Areas that are NOT running a drought deficit are most "at-risk" for frost quakes.

❄️🚗 Winter is here — is your vehicle ready? 🚗❄️

After this weekend’s heavy snowstorm, we’ve all seen the reports of cars slipping and sliding. Don’t let yours be one of them! A few key checks can make all the difference in keeping you safe and comfortable this winter:

- Tires matter most. All-season tires are fine for mild conditions, but snow tires are designed with softer rubber, deeper tread patterns and extra grooves that grip icy roads far better. They give you shorter stopping distances and more control when it counts.

- Battery check. Cold weather not only drains battery power faster, but also causes the engine to crank harder. Make sure yours is tested and strong enough to handle freezing mornings.

- Heater & HVAC. A working heater isn’t just about comfort — it keeps your windshield defrosted and visibility clear. A clean cabin air filter helps keep the air flowing through the system with full force.

- Suspension health. Good suspension helps keep your tires firmly on the road, improving traction and stability when roads are slick. Worn out struts/shocks allow the tires to bounce across the road, reducing traction and stopping distance.

- Fuel additives. In extreme cold, additives can prevent fuel line freeze-ups by reducing moisture in the tank and keep your engine running smoothly.

🔧 DIY Winter Tips:
-Plan a little more time before hitting the road.
-A warm engine gets better MPGs. Cold engines driven immediately don't last as long as they could.
- Keep your gas tank at least half full to avoid excessive condensation build-up with temperature changes between night-time and day-time, or while driving as the fuel pump warms the fuel.
- Check and top off windshield washer fluid rated for low temps.
- Clear as much snow/ice as possible before driving, including headlights, taillights and roof.
-Avoid operating windshield wipers until the windshield is clear of snow/ice and is warmed up a little.
- Carry an emergency kit with jumper cables/jump pack, tire inflator, blankets, and a flashlight. These things also make great Christmas gifts!
-Putting weight in the trunk of a front wheel drive vehicle is counter-productive as it takes weight off the drive wheels that are also responsible for steering and the majority of braking.
