Have you ever noticed how your surroundings can impact your inner state? For those navigating grief or trauma, the home can become a place of stress rather than a sanctuary.

We believe that healing starts with a safe, compassionate environment. At the Spatial Health & Wellness Institute, we teach professionals how to create these healing spaces, not just for others, but for themselves too.

If you're a wellness professional looking to deepen your practice, spatial health can be your most powerful tool.

One thing our founder emphasizes is the connection between head, heart, and home. Shanon Williams-Hughes recently published The Ouchie! Journal, a powerful therapeutic journaling tool for parents and caregivers to document hard moments their littles experience from their preverbal stage (0 to 3-4 years) all the way up to about 10 years of age. Journaling has been shown to effectively improve things like immune and heart health while processing trauma narratives allows for people to integrate those traumatic moments and break the loop of trauma response. Gift your children their own stories and, in turn, their healing.

Parents have a new tool to document their young child's life. Author Shanon Williams-Hughes joins Aaron Jordan on FOX 2 Detroit Live at 4pm to discuss the impact she hopes it will have.

This is perhaps the heaviest of the horsemen. Toxic Shame makes us feel like we're to blame for the state of our homes. It says, "I'm a failure," or "I should be able to do this." This is a lie. Your home is a reflection of your journey, not your worth. We are here to help you without judgment, because your space deserves compassion, and so do you.

When life feels like too much, so does our home.

The mental burden of a cluttered space can leave us feeling paralyzed, trapped in a cycle of "I'll do it later." It’s the Horseman of Overwhelm, and it’s a heavy rider.

But you don’t have to carry this weight. Swipe for a gentle reminder and a small step toward peace.

Your home should be your sanctuary. But when head, heart, and home are out of balance, a trio of "horsemen" can take over. This week, we’ll introduce you to the 3 Horsemen of Spatial Health—and show you how you can compassionately send them on their way. Stay tuned to meet the first one tomorrow.

🏇The 3 Horsemen of Spatial Health 🏇

We often say: head, heart, home. But when these three are out of balance, so is your space.

🧠 Overwhelm (Head) → mental fog, decision fatigue, “where do I even start?”
❤️ Toxic Shame (Heart) → guilt, embarrassment, hiding, self-blame
🏡 Overstimulation (Home) → noise, clutter, sensory overload, no place to rest

When these horsemen ride together, they often push us toward:

😔 Surrender → numbing out, giving up, believing nothing will change
🚪 Avoidance → denial, staying busy elsewhere, avoiding home

But you’re not powerless. With compassion, small steps, and mindful choices, your space can shift from draining to healing.

Spatial Health is more than just how you keep your home. It's the connected relationship between your home, body, lifestyle, mental and emotional health. These parts of you make up your spatial health system, which means that imbalance in one area has the ability to impact you in other areas. I like to think of it as a machine with gears, pulleys, and energy source. If one of your gears moves out of place - if one of your pulleys slack or if your energy source loses power, your machine will not function properly. And if that continues, you are at risk of your machine shutting down, altogether. It's that exact same dynamic when it comes to spatial health. I'm on a mission to help you understand your spatial health system, what is impacting it and how to get it back on track. Contact me today and explore what is possible. 🧼✨ "They just need a fresh start."

That’s one of the most common things we hear when someone is struggling to keep up with their home.

And sure — sometimes, a deep clean can help. But for many of us, it doesn’t matter how many times we “start fresh.”

Because if the underlying issue isn't addressed…the clutter, the overwhelm, the disconnection from our space — it all comes back.

This is where spatial health comes in.
When we understand how our heads, hearts, and homes are connected, we can stop treating home care like a to-do list…

…and start approaching it like a healing practice.
Swipe through this carousel to explore why “just clean it” doesn’t always work — and what does.

💭 Have you ever felt like every fresh start ended up right back where you started?

Drop a 🏠 in the comments if this resonates — or share your experience. You’re not alone.

One of the most common misconceptions about spatial health that we find ourselves debunking is this one.

And it’s understandable.

If shutting down, brain fog, numbness, or forgetfulness to the point that your executive function goes offline is not your normal response to stress overload, I can see how this would be hard to wrap your head around.

I’m here to let everyone know that it is the reality for countless folks. And often, they don’t understand what’s happening either.

After all, they know they know how to wash the dishes.
They know that they need to wash the dishes.
But when it comes to ex*****on, that’s where the trouble comes in.

When our brains decide our stress levels are beyond what we can tolerate, they do what they feel is necessary to protect us.

For some brains, that means kicking into high gear and getting active with the things they can control.

But for those that do not see an end to the threat — no hope of relief or regulation — the brain can go into shutdown mode. That shutdown is a form of protection.

This happens to a lot of us.

There is nothing wrong with you.
There isn’t even anything different about you than those who get active during stress.

There is simply a difference in your brain’s interpretation of stress and regulation.

Before you start wondering — no, there isn’t a magic “number” when it comes to stress and when each response kicks in. Everyone is different.

What is consistent is how brains work.
