Nurses’ call to action!

Nurses, nursing leaders, and allies call for immediate reforms to protect the public from the harm to health, education, and social wellbeing caused by current federal immigration enforcement practices, as seen recently in the senseless killing of Minneapolis nurse Alex Pretti.

What happened to Alex Pretti is absolutely heartbreaking and beyond imaginable. It is profoundly disturbing that a nurse, someone dedicated to caring for others and stepping in to protect a fellow human being, could lose his life in this way. As nurses, we answer the call to serve with compassion, courage, and an unwavering commitment to health and human dignity. Our ethical duty is to care for others and to advocate for safety in our communities—values that Alex lived by and ultimately died defending.

This statement holds true for the National Association of Hispanic Nurses–Michigan Chapter. As President of NAHN-MI, I affirm that we stand united in honoring Alex Pretti’s life and legacy. 🌟 NAHN-MI is proud to champion health equity in Pontiac! 🌟

In partnership with Oakland University and the Pontiac Academy for Excellence, we’re bringing wellness workshops to local elementary students, covering healthy eating & physical wellness, healthy emotions, and career exploration.

📊 Over 400 children completed all three workshops this year, building healthy habits, emotional resilience, and excitement for their futures.

🎁✨ NAHN-Michigan Holiday Toy Drive and General Membership Meeting✨🎁

Our NAHN-MI members gathered in Lansing for a joyful morning of community service as we partnered with Cristo Rey Church to collect toys for local children. Thanks to the generosity of our members, students, and supporters, we were able to donate a beautiful variety of toys that will help brighten the holiday season for many families.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed and to Taqueria El Chaparrito for hosting us. Together, we continue to uplift and support Michigan’s communities through service, compassion, and unity. 🫶🏽

NAHN-Michigan stands with every nurse, student nurse, and nursing faculty member affected by the Department of Education’s alarming reclassification of advanced practice nurses (MSN, DNP) as “non-professionals.”

This decision is not only factually incorrect, it is dangerous!
Nurses are licensed professionals, clinicians, educators, researchers, and leaders who uphold the health and safety of our communities every single day.

Reclassifying our profession threatens:
• Nursing students’ ability to access federal financial aid
• Graduate nursing education pathways
• Workforce development during a national nursing shortage
• The professional recognition our field has earned through decades of evidence-based practice and service

As Latino nurses and allies committed to health equity, workforce diversity, and strengthening the pipeline of future nurses, we reject any policy that undermines nursing as a profession.

NAHN-MI will continue to advocate, educate, and mobilize until this is corrected. Our students, our patients, and our communities deserve better.

Nurses are professionals. Nurses have always been professionals. And we will not allow anyone to diminish this truth.
