Greg Abbott has just a couple more days to decide whether to veto a statewide ban on cannabis products that has provoked a huge backlash across Texas's political spectrum. What's a governor to do?

By Sunday, he will have to decide whether to veto legislation that would effectively shut down the $5.5 billion legal cannabis industry and close 8,000-plus retail cannabis stores that the Legislature has allowed to flourish for years. Striking down the bill would put him at odds with Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, the state's chief moralist who has increasingly involved himself in the day-to-day lives of Texans but enjoys a sort of mind meld with the Republican grassroots.

Okaying it, on the other hand, would deprive many Texans of products they have become accustomed to, and anger a legion of veterans, business owners, and ordinary Texans, many of whom are pillorying Patrick and the Lege on social media.
